Stuck in gear

Had to get towed home this morning.

I got to a round about took it out of one gear to put into another and it wouldn't go. No gears were selectable but reverse went in and I managed (seemed like clutch was struggling) to get it back about 20 yards into a layby.

So even though the car is in neutral, when I start it up, it's in gear.

I've tried adjusting the linkage but I can't get the locking pin to come up when the plate is pushed down fully.

Any advice on what I can try ?

Thanks

I had this happen to me about 6 months ago. Reverse worked fine but couldn't get it back into forward gears without manually moving the gear selector outside the gearbox. The selector fork had indeed gone inside and I had to change the gearbox. Changed the clutch too, because it would be daft not to. Fairly expensive if you took it to a specialist, clutch and gearbox change approx £1300, but that's a worst case scenario. You need to have a look inside the gearbox if you can and see what state it's in.

Common 02m failure point
Easier and much cheaper to just put a 2nd hand box on as they are dirt cheap now
Im on my 3rd myself however all my damage has come from track use

I had a gearbox guy come round and confirm the gearbox has had it.

I was looking at getting another car but don't really want to fork out loads of cash plus I've really looked after this car (apart from giving her a hard time) in terms of servicing etc -- I think i'm going to go for a second hand gear box and try to get another 50k miles out of her. She's already on 157,000 and I just did an oil change a couple of weeks ago.

She's sat outside the house looking miserable. Gutted.
