Drop in coolant level

Hi All

I have a 2009 1.4 TSI, just under 74,000 miles. The past 6 months I have had to top up the coolant reservoir from practically empty twice due to the warning light appearing on the dash.

I've taken a look in the engine bay, and under the car and there are no noticeable leaks or mayo spots, so I am coming to the conclusion it may not be a hose leak and might be something more sinister!

Are there any other obvious areas I could look before taking to the garage?

I got a hole in my radiator and because of the guard under the engine only a small drip of fluid was obvious!
