Just ordered my facia from Dave at Sere and about to take the plunge on one of the Chinese stereos off ebay. The one i'm looking at is an xtrons px71mtvdab for £200 with dab, gps, usb etc.

Anybody have one and is the battery drain an issue on these considering I have an 06' pre facelift Leon?

Thanks

Just out of interest do these things work with all the stock functions? Assume not like all the tie in with the mfd/climate/dab/nav etc. on facelift models and steering controls. Good upgrade for pre FL running older non-touch units.

Hi,

Yes it has canbus, but the DAB is optional through a USB DAB stick. if you guys want good units and really good customer service try these 2 guys, based in Germany, a little more expensive, but the service is top notch and easier to return if any problems. they are AVIN Europe, the guys in VW forum in the US love the unit and there is also Icartech. here are the links;

I use the Icartech one, and the sound quality is great. it also allows you to connect up to 500gb device through USB and has 3 USB. it also has adjustable frequency and gain for subwoofer.

What happens to the nav and track display stuff in the mfd in the dash tho and the stock dab etc.take it that just goes? Are these actually an upgrade from the likes of the stock 315?

Bang up to date say nav would be nice and Spotify built in

the nav and track info will not work anymore, I believe none of these types of units do that. if you have dab, you can add it either through usb dab stick or buy their adaptor. you can use your factory dab antenna, you might have to use an adaptor depending on the connection. it does show climate control, doors opening, parking sensors, etc if you have them activated to show on the screen. The sat nav can be updated through many sites, or if you need I can get them for nothing, and you can install any app you want. I don't have dab, I use internet radio app that I tether through my phone and use data. the data usage is not too bad, about 100mb for about 8 hours of usage, depending on bitrate.

I was thinking of getting this one - I've asked a question about Canbus and the DAB cos it's not that clear.

I just bought the one you linked ( my post count is too low to post url's). Initially I just wanted an upgraded stereo because the stock one looks terrible and I wanted all my music on an sd card or usb stick rather than having to make cd's all the time.

The stereo I linked had dab but no android which I thought made more sense as i'd probably use dab more than any android features. Plus my phone is android and always in the car with me.

In the end I think this one looks better, has way more features and it can be upgraded to dab which hopefully makes a little more sense.

My other option for under £250 was a sony, pioneer, jvc etc. basic double din. I will update when it's fitted next week and if I have any regrets in not going for a name brand.

As Koush said and they have also confirmed you add the USB dongle to it for the DAB function, it works with steering controls via canbus. USB DAB stick below.

I also looked at the non-android version but just feel i'd get more use out of the android one, let me know how you go, also how much was the facia from sere motors ?

Thanks. I will add DAB, but in a month or so, as long as the stereo functions correctly. Yep, I think android is a better bet.

The facia is £29.95 with 10 clips. If you're getting a vw type radio you'll need to get an RNS curved facia. The cheaper copies on ebay are all standard double din facia shape. Sere have the oem version of these as well but i'm not sure of the price although I guess it would be the same.

tga2000, the one you bought, is the one with the ebay link? if so, I think it does not come with dab, and it is android. Also, if you want to connect a USB stick bigger than 32gb, format it in fat32, then you can connect up to 500gb. sorry, just saw you going to get a dab in month, so disregard.

Thanks for the heads up. Would that be the same for the sd card? If I have 50-100gb of music on usb/sd I probably wouldn't even use the radio very much. Also, what do you use for gps?

Hi,

I believe it would only work on USB, you can try to format the SD card and see what, nothing to loose. the program I use is;
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm
as Windows can not format a more than 32gb.

As for GPS, I use Igo Primo. I just finished making the maps to 2016 Q2, so its up to date as can be. I can send you the file, but it is big, about 10gb if you want all of Europe. You can also get them from Ebay for about £25.00, which comes with an 8GB SD card. You can also download free gps software from the Android store, like Navmii, and it free to update, just make sure you have a good wifi signal.

I did get it. The sound quality was terrible, the radio reception had constant interference, the wifi was extremely slow when tethering and after a couple of days it developed a fault where it would make a whining noise when playing usb/sd card stored music. I returned it for a refund after five days.

I was then going to get a name brand but was recommended a different chinese company. I am not able to post links or pics yet but I ordered a Pumpkin Android 5.1 VW from amazon for £259.99.
It has excellent reviews. I've had it installed for just over a week and so far it's an amazing bit of kit. Everything works as it should. Plug and play with all steering wheel controls pre-programmed. The sound quality is better than the stock player. I downloaded power amp from playstore which has even more eq and tone options. I have almost 3000 songs on an sd card which beats constant cd making. The radio reception is about as good as the stock player.

I also downloaded waze and google maps but i'm currently using Here as it works offline with uk download map. The gps is spot on and gets signal within seconds. Bluetooth is also good although I wish I was still able to use the cars in built BT as it displays on MFD.

Early days but so far so good and I would recommend not to go for Xtrons and get Pumpkin. Costs more but there is a significant difference in quality.
