Temp gauge playing up

Hi ive jus drove on the motorway in my mk1 cupra r and my temp gauge went down from idle which is 90 to almost 60 which is cold but when i reached to a stop the temp gauge went back to normal when im stationary could that be the thermostat playing up ????

Yeah thats typical of thermostat trouble, possibly the coolant temp sensor too.

Had this problem during the winter . Eventually got round to changing the thermostat, seems
To have sorted it although winter will be the proper test.

Yeah the going down and back up on the motorway is typical thermostat as said above. Easy and cheap enough to change, just a little fiddily.
