I have 1.6 Altea Sport 2006 and about a month ago the oil warning light came on when going round a roundabout, when I check there was hardly any oil and there cream gunk on the filler cap I put 2litres of oil in as that is all i could get at the time and then about 2 weeks later same thing the car has been doing some long jouneys over the last 4 months and there is no blue smoke, any advice on what this can be i did think head gasket but I am not loosing any coolant?

The white stuff is a sign of water ingress I believe.

Could just be the breathers need a clean. You will get white gunk if the engine is breathing heavy too.

The 'gunk' is a water/oil emulsion usually caused by short journeys.

Being low on oil allows a larger than normal volume of damp air to enter the crankcase as the engine cools.

Using old engine oil won't help as it may have absorbed some moisture from the atmosphere.

Similar reason for keeping the fuel tank topped up - less volume for the water from damp air to be absorbed by the fuel.

Presumably you don't have a water injection system.
