Hello, I have a 55 Plate Ibiza and I recently put it's through it's MOT and it's failed on emissions and front flexy hose leaking. Got the front flexy hose fixed and re tested for emissions and it's still reading almost triple CO. I've spoken to my local German Specialists and I suggested it may be the Cat but they think not... So anyone any ideas?

Sorry! It's a 1.2 petrol agz engine.

Is there anyway that I can tell if the cats gone? Don't wanna replace it and it not be the problem as my cars only worth £600 and I've already spent at least £400 since Jan 16 :censored:

Maybe not the most technical, but if you can get under the car, hit it with you first a couple times.

If it sounds like there's lots of bits bouncing around inside it's failed, no noise and should be OK.

As I say, I may get shot down, maybe there's a better way.

Hope it helps

If you had an IR thermometer, you could point it at the cat and see if it was getting up to working temperature, I'd hope a garage would use that to check before replacing one.

Has this leaking flexi been left for too long and now its made a mess of the cat, if so, maybe consider as a last cheap gasp running a load of cat cleaner through it?

The front flexy pipe after the downpipe had been blowing for about a week and then I replaced the pipe on Saturday just gone. I put Cata Clean into my fuel tank this morning before I went to work and went the long way to work down the motorways to blast it through. Then today on my way home the eml came on, so I plugged my obd reader in and error code P0420 came up which is Catalyst Threshold (Bank 1). I really don't want to waste money on replacing things and doing trial and error because the cars really not worth it. Cheers.

I think that it has to be said, from memory, these early 1.2 3 cylinder engines, did suffer from manucat failures, now why that was I can't say - maybe due to other engine issues, but if that car is still on its original manucat, then it has done well, just to hurt more, the precat Lambda should also be replaced to help that new cat along.

Edit:- I take your point that that car is not worth much, but all the same, if it is otherwise okay, with a new cat and Lambda probe, it may well keep you going for a couple of years - which will repay what you have put into it. I also agree that guessing is for mugs - and can get quite expensive if not guessed accurately.

Get it scanned on VCDS, as Rum4mo said it could also be the lambda sensor (cheap fix) or possibly the engine temperature sensor (also cheap).

Reading fault codes off the ECU will show if those sensors are at fault.
