The VAG scene is good but numbers are limited. Not many people into quality modding.
Nowhere as big & developed as US or Europe.

Ego picture post

Collection of images from the car magazine photo session months ago.
I thought it's fair if I at least once post some complete images of the car :)

Hello Mr. Haldex

This weekend I connected the Haldex unit to the wiring loom of the car and checked if I could access the Haldex controller module.
All went on smooth and I got a nice greetings from my Haldex unit.

Next I'll service the Haldex unit, change oils, filter and pump.

They look awesome would love to get a set for mine

Thank you, happy you liked it.
Lights are from Dectane and the yellow bar is oem on the Cupra bumper, just painted in yellow by me.

Haldex service

Time for an update I believe...

I'm all set for the AWD conversion but the shop that will assist me are not.
I would like to do the work myself but this conversion requires welding and cutting into the chassis that I rather let someone else do with experience.

Meanwhile I decided to service my Haldex, following bits where done this week.

  • New oil pump
  • New oil filter
  • New Haldex coupling oil
  • New Axle oil
  • New control unit gasket

Filter and pump where both in good shape as the Haldex I sourced was a low mileage unit.
Performing the service isn't difficult but needs some attention. The process has been described by others already, see the attached links for further details and insight.

Steering rack

Since the beginning of this swap I've been struggling to get my ABS working but I've not been bothered about it. I recently had to emergency brake on the highway and it resulted in flat tires and nearly an accident.
Once and for all I was determined to resolve this before I go driving again. I've been aware of what might be the issue as I can't calibrate my steering angle due to missing G85 steering angle sensor, without the calibration the ABS won't work.
My TTRS ECU expects to receive the steering angle input from the gen3 steering rack. My Leon was equipped with a gen2 steering rack that lacks the steering angle sensor as it's instead fitted behind the steering wheel.
So down the subframe went, the VAG engineer whom designed this should burn in hell :)

Fortunately VAG designed the gen3 steering rack with the intention to make it fit on a gen2 equipped vehicle.
Some state that you can marry the TTRS ECU with an gen2 steering rack but I've really tried my best to find out how, even had an Audi tech look at it and we could not make it work.
As per the image you can see that the steering racks look identical, only one detail makes them apart. Spot the missing fitting point on the gen3!

Quick check with VCDS now shows no trace of G85 steering angle errors and the steering rack basic settings options seems to be enabled.
I'll need to drive it to have it finally calibrated and confirmed but car is on jacks due to other ongoing works :D

AC delete

I've been searching for a way to remove my AC compressor pump, it saves ~4Kg and lessens the load on the drivetrain.
The EA888 (2.0TSI) AC delete bracket 06K145172 is a direct fit but requires some engineering to adapt the dual pulley from the AC compressor.
Without the oem AC compressor dual pulley design in place the alternator and water pump get disconnected from the drivetrain as per the image.

Phase II

Initially the AWD conversion should have been completed long ago but the garage that was supposed to assist me with a lift and welding seem to have lost interest.
A month ago I finally realized that there’s only one way, “DIY”, so I initiated the work on jacks. It’s hard work to do it this way as every task becomes more time demanding and difficult but I must say that It’s been a joy regardless.
The actual process of a AWD conversion has been done by others and well documented, summary of my work so far:

  • Cut out for secondary fuel pump access
  • Mounting of AWD fuel tank
  • Cut out of spare wheel, replaced by a flat aluminum plate and glued instead of welded
  • Assembly of rear aluminum subframe including the Haldex
