Hi Guys,

im new to this forum and finally bought my first cupra r! its the amk engine with a few mods (remap, diverter valve, induction kit etc). It was running fine till yesterday tho.

Since iv had it, (a month or so), i noticed that the fan would kick in when the engine was warm as it should. However, when it did, it kicked in loud and only for a few seconds. It would bring the temp down, and then turn off. But a few mins later, when the temp went up, it would kick in again. I thought this was abit mad but kinda just went with it.

Yesterday, me and the mrs went for a cheeky fish and chips in the car. Left it running, whilst we ate, looked at my temp gauge and it was 3 quarters of the way up. :-o . but the funny bit is, the fan then kicked in. now, got home, checked coolant levels and it was abit low. Topped it up, and needed to do 100 mile drive. got stuck in traffic and the car got to 111 degrees. but this time no fan came on. So i cranked the heaters and got the temp down. got home and checked, and the water level was low again.

further inspection showed me that, no fans were kicking in, and the small fan would only kick in when the ac was on. It would kick in loud, and then cut off after a few secs, then come back on again.

The water pump has been done less than 20,000 miles ago and it does seem to be working as you can feel the water moving about in the pipes.

Can someone please help me as its driving me potty!!!

Have you checked your oil filler cap for either water drops or a mayonnaise like substance?

yes pal, doesnt seem like there is any head gasket issues. maybe the reason its loosing coolant is because the engine is running hot?? or could i be wrong?

I'm in a similar position my self right now, however my car is fine at idle and only over heats when under serious load (hills) or going for an over take. But as quickly as the needle rises it settles back to 90deg when I let off the throttle.

When the car over heats the fans kick in for less than 20 seconds but at the slow speed. I disconnected the fan switch on the radiator and bridged the connections, both low and high speed settings work fine.
I've got a new switch ready to go on.

Whilst playing with the fans I also checked my coolant flow, lovley and smooth at idle. However at around 2-3k revs, the flow dropped dramatically, then resumed at a steady flow. I assumed this is a failing pump, so I've ordered a cam belt kit (according to the cars history folder, cam belt was changed at 86k (4 years ago), I'm now on 107k so probably due a change).

You say the water pump has been changed 20k ago, was it with a metal impelor? I'm not sure on the life of plastic ones but they do fail.
Check your flow by taking the return pipe off the coolant reservoir and holding over the top of the reservoir, have a mate in the car to start it and do the throttle, the flow should be faster with more revs.

I'm not sure if it was the metal impeller but when I rev the car the temp drops a few degrees so that's why I thought it wasnt the water pump
