I have had my Leon since Tuesday now and I'm loving it!! But... When I plug in my dashcam in the USB port it isn't sending enough power to the cam. Is there any way of producing more power to the USB ports? Would changing the fuse work?

Hardwire it in, doddle to do and all the wires are hidden, plus it automatically turns on and off with ignition too.

No mate it doesn't work in any of them. If it plug it into the cigarette lighter it works but the cable isn't long enough to stretch when it sits on the windscreen.

Does it work connected to other USB ports?

I saw a post on here of a step by step guide but I wouldn't do that in case I mess it up haha!

Just go to your local Halfrauds and get them to do it.......... doesn't take long, not expensive, and they take all the hassle out of it for you!

Pretty much impossible to get it wrong especially if camera is nextbase as they have their own hardwire kit. Took me 30 minutes tops I reckon

Where is yours hardwired to? Mine is hardwire to the 12v socket with piggy back fuse so draws the same power as the socket would provide anyway surely? Dont they also have the 12v to 5v step down converter as well as part of the hardwire?

That's exactly the same set up as I have and I can't for the life of me work out why it doesn't take sufficient power. Mines a mini 0806 model.

God knows because it's working off the same power supply as you're then tapping into????

I've got a nextbase 212 and have had no issues. I've also not reviewed any footage to see what picture quality is like, only been in the car a handful of weeks.

I was wondering about powering a camera off of the USB - it seems that answers that! I'll probably hardwire (as I have in my Yeti) but I at least wanted to get a quick install done before finding time to do it properly.

You can get 2-into-1 USB cables that might help with extra power, but then you have no USBs left for any other use.

The other small issue I have is that the windscreen/mirror set-up does not lend itself to a very stealthy installation (I have the auto-dimming mirror). On my Yeti I can not see the camera from the driver's seat as the mirror hides it well but in the Leon it looks like it'll be on show like a pair of dog's doodahs. I'm a bit of a neat freak in these things.

The USB power appears to be configurable. I've seen code changes to allowing data only or charge & data so perhaps yours is set to data only and therefore not enough power to charge.

USB is 5V so any connection directly into the car (cigarette lighter or fuse box) is going to need a 12v to 5v transformer, otherwise you'll fry your camera.

It's not the voltage which determines if your camera works, it's the current. The dedicated USB ports are unlikely to be supplying enough ampage if they're designed for connecting USB sticks etc. Your 12v cigarette lighter is probably fused up to 3a/5amps so is a better bet to hardwire to (that's where I have mine).

I have auto dimming mirror and mine sits nicely behind it tucked away with only a little bit visible under the mirror

I'm in Dundee, Scotland

I just ran an extension USB lead behind the A pillar then ran it along under the glove box and back to the power socket into a USB socket on an adaptor in the socket. Cable is run along the upper edge of the window and held in place with small self adhesive hooks and lead goes into dash cam which is attached just behind mirror. The only place you really see the wire is when door is open where the wire runs out from under the glove box to behind the door seal, then disappears up and behind the A pillar. 15 minute job.

I am also in Dundee pm me if you want a look RJay.
