Strange behavior on instrument cluster

I have a 2010 Facelift and its my understanding that the instruments are not constantly illuminated, but my needles are constantly lit
Is this normal or has somebody been messing about with VCDS settings

Another thing I noticed, also related to the above, is during daylight driving it does appear that the dial numbers are dimly illuminated
They do get brighter if I turn the headlights lights on, so I can't decide if its just glow/reflection from the needles or some sort of automatic system at work as they are most certainly not lit when its dark outside

Yay, just answered my own question

Page 118 of the handbook (come on, who even reads the instructions )

"The instrument lightning(dials and needles) is switched on when the ignition is on and the vehicle lights are off
The instrument lighting is dimmed automatically as the daylight starts to fade, it goes out completely as the ambient light gets very low
This function acts as a reminder to the driver to switch on tge dipped beam in good time as lghting conditions become poor"

All very clever, although that doesn't explain why my needles stay illuminate permanent
