For me when I test drove the 2 it was about how the car felt, how it reacted to the accelerator etc, maybe some of that was down to the 1.8's multi link rear suspension.... I don't know.

depends on so many things
- were both manual? or DSG
- if DSG were both in sport mode
- millage? mine is a bit faster now after 5k when it was only 1k
- petrol used
- air temp
- warm vs cold engine
- engine sound is better on 1.8 and that makes it feel much faster than it is (placebo effect ;)

- petrol used NOT ABSOLUTELY SURE, I ASKED WHAT THEY ADVISED WHEN I GET ONE, THEY RECOMMENDED AT LEAST THE 97 RON
- air temp
- warm vs cold engine BOTH COLD

Well it is "faster" but as I said it felt faster, more responsive, smoother on accelerated pull aways, both tests were on mainly A and B roads, maybe with the smaller roads the multilink could have added to that feel?

Multi link will probably gave helped but I've got to say I have been impressed with the handling on the 1.4 to date, even with some spirited blasts around some country roads.

For me, the increase in overall running costs of the 1.8 over the 1.4 wasn't justified by the increase in power, especially when; for a few hundred quid you can easily match it anyway.

For me the FR badge is a trim level, not a performance level. It equates to the Audi S Line or the VW R LIne . A sporty look but not necessarily much else.

In the performance world Audi have the RS and the S, VW have the R and GTI. Seat have the Cupra R and Cupra. What else do you need?

how did we get from discussing that the FR should be 200bhp+ to argueing that the 1.8 is no faster/better than the 1.4?

anyhoos, as mentioned VW group politics I doubt would be happy about SEAT poaching Golf GTi buyers. The Golf GTi is a major flagship for VW, just as quattro and 5 cylinders is an Audi thing.

I might have mixed up the VAG 1.8 engines here, but isn't the DSG with limited torque figures of 250Nm (same as 1.4) but the manual has something higher?

Or maybe this was for the VAG 192PS engine..

and on that note, did Seat not want the 192PS engine from the Polo GTI?

Don't forget SEAT did offer the FR in GTI rivalling 2.0 TSI 200/211PS form in the mk2.

They stopped it as sales were very poor! So financially you'd assume it makes no sense to bring it in on the mk3. Petrol heads typically went for the Cupra.

I think have have the range pretty much spot on in terms of power/branding that captures a cross mix of the market

I agree that the FR range is a bit in no mans land...
Really, they should drop the 1.4, its not remotely 'sporty' and is just too gutless

The 184 Fr competes exactly with the Golf GTD, but the 1.8tsi is trounced by a GTi, and the 1.4 is just embarrassing. As has been said Seat seem to treat the FR as a trim level, and to me the 1.4's are in the same category as those 1.2 corsa's they sell with the full bodykit and wheels :)

Same category as a 1.2 Corsa? Please shut up.

Got tbh, I certainly wouldn't put it in the category as the Corsa. It's got nearly double the horsepower for a start and at least it is relatively sporty, the Corsa is the same car with the same wheels painted black half the time.

Having driven the 1.2 leon, the 1.4 is a massive step up imo but as I've said earlier in the thread, still lacking a little bit more from time to time.

The current Leon FR 180 has the same amount of torque in both manual and DSG (DQ200) form, according to

http://www.seat.co.uk/new-cars/leon-5dr/technical-data/fr-technology.html

However, I see that the Ateca comes with the DQ381 7 speed DSG to handle the 320Nm of torque that the 2.0 TSI (tuned to 190PS) produces.

http://www.seat.com.mt/content/dam/.../pdf/ateca/ateca-technical-specifications.pdf

So hopefully that combination will find its way into the Leon at some point.

In A3 S Line trim the 2.0 TFSI 190PS is half a second quicker to 60mph than the old 1.8 TFSI 180PS, which makes it a healthy 1.3 seconds quicker than the 1.4 150PS... although VW may worry that it's too close to the performance of the Golf GTI :banned:

Am i correct in saying Audi look after Seat and VW look after Skoda ?....... VW allow Skoda to use the 245 hp in the Octavia VRS, ...... Does Audi have a 245 hp ish engine in their line up... NOPE, in normal A3 (excluding S and RS) a 2.0 tfsi is the highest with 190 bhp. I think the next highest is the S3 with 310 hp.

I will await the new Astra GSI figures with interest :)

Looks like you're spot on with the VW and Skoda partnership but the A3 and Leon currently have no petrol engines in common...

Golf GTI and Octavia vRS:
2.0 TSI with 245PS & 370Nm (43mpg)
2.0 TSI with 230PS & 350Nm (44mpg)

Golf R Line and Octavia SEL:
1.5 TSI with 150PS & 250Nm (55/57mpg)

A3 S Line:
2.0 TFSI with 190PS & 320Nm (50mpg)
1.5 TFSI with 150PS & 250Nm (54/57mpg)
1.0 TFSI with 116PS & 200Nm (60mpg)

Leon FR:
1.8 TSI with 180PS & 250Nm (47/49mpg)
1.4 EcoTSI with 150PS & 250Nm (58mpg)
1.4 TSI with 125PS & 200Nm (54mpg)
