Playing video though infotainment system?

Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble getting video to play though the infotainment screen.

To be honest i'm not even sure if I can. I have an early 2014 seat leon. With the MIB1 unit. I guess it's not the plus version. Does my car even support this in any way?

I've tried an SD card fat32 format in various formats, android phone though the media connector usb cable. Ipod Video (but I think this is not supported anyway)

Any ideas?

You can do it, but it's a bit of a faff.
You'll need a mdi to rca adapter lead (https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/362104045765)
You'll have to go into settings and turn on 'media in' or something.
Then input your media through this. I used an rca to hdmi adapter, and ran a raspberry pi. I played outrun on the megadrive emulator. https://i.imgur.com/82AUOAm.jpg

As I said, bit of a faff. https://i.imgur.com/mXnvZFP.jpg
It won't work when moving either.

Much easier to run a tablet for videos.

It shouldn’t work when moving - video in motion is illegal in the UK. If caught, you’d face prosecution and your insurance would be invalidated.

Worth reading the article at the link below;

http://www.comand.co.uk/index.php/video--tv-in-motion

I don't want it to work when moving. That's just stupid.

I was sat at an airport park waiting for 2 hours the other day with nothing to do, a few movies on a sd card in the car would be useful.

Thanks for the reply, if I've got those media in connections in the glove box it should work? I don't mind if being a faff, I love tinkering with things :) how did you power the pi out of interest?

I imagine so, mines an early '14 too.

Usb from cigarette lighter socket, was a 2 way one and used the other for the rca to hdmi adapter.

Good luck - mine didn't have sound for some reason, will revisit another time.

Hi hoppus,
I own a brand new Leon FR Facelift with the new infotainment ‘media system plus’ and I also can’t play video files.

I did a little research one month ago and I have found that Video files can only be played on head units with navigation and a DVD drive.
They are called ‘navi system plus’ or ‘mib2 high’.

There is an ‘adapter’ or ‘box’ called ‘video interface’ that connects to the original screen and runs a fully featured android os, therefore you’ll be able to play video files, install apps and use Navigation apps like on a smartphone.

Does this mean you still keep the original head unit and all the car features working but allow you to have an extra input with all the benefits of Android.

Any idea what its call so I can check out prices.

As I wrote in the previous post, it is called VIDEO INTERFACE and yes you will be able to keep the original head unit and all the car features working.

You connect this so-called BOX in between the head unit and the display, this will allow you easy switching between the two via holding the MENU button for few seconds or somthing like that :)

Please note that those Video interface boxes are very expensive, at least for me.

There is one called ADAPTIV which I like, But I think it is NOT Android-based.

and there are many on Aliexpress that allow full Android experience, for example:

Thanks that was great, from what i have seen this does not support all the on board functions.

Spoke to local dealer of this and he recommended https://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/SingleView/iLX-702LEON which does this and all the current stuff but it retails fitted around £1300

Time to start saving me thinks

Surely it's just cheaper at this point to keep an amazon fire tablet in the glovebox? You'll get a better screen, wifi and not have to worry about draining your car battery or having to keep the engine running?

I've got a Kong feng Gameboy colour clone kept in the car for a similar purpose when doing the school run...

It doesn’t need to be able to communicate with all the onboard function as you said because you install this box in between the car original head unit and the display.

This way you keep all the onboard function and enjoy the benefit of android at the same time.

As I said, you switch between the original head unit interface and the video interface box as needed by holding the menu button or holding the top left corner of the display for few seconds

Regarding the Alpine iLX702, it is a nice product but way to expensive.

I've just looked at the manuals in my car which say navi system plus. So should I be able to play video from USB or SD card?

If you have mib 2, enable full link and use a sony xperia z series phone. For mib 1 use iphone or ipod with 32pin charge connector and red head media in cable. But video stops while driving. You need video in motion activation. I do not suggest interfaces.
