Under tray side supports

Noticed a massive crack in my drivers side side support for the under tray (The plastic moulding than runs on the inside of the engine bay down to the under tray). It's still all holding together but was wondering if it's possible to buy them on their own as the under tray itself is still ok. Would sooner get this fixed up than risk it gradually getting worse.

Could do with a few of the retaining clips too as some of the screws have nothing keeping them in.

...perhaps I should get the whole lot :D

I might have a spare in the garage you can have cheap, I usually bin them but I've a feeling there might be 1 or 2 knocking about still.

Cable ties, lots of cable ties - that’s what’s holding my under tray on.

Splits and cracks can be held together by drilling holes either side of them and again plenty of cable ties.

Cable ties are the best replacement - I didn't have trouble with the undertray on my old TDI 110, but on my TDI 140 Altea, all of the speed clips (|I think that's what they are called) have pulled out of the plastic side panels. I think that once they get a bit rusty, the torque needed to undo them exceeds the strength of the plastic they are in.

The undertray is different for diesels compared to petrol engines, much bigger, and the LCR has a very different one too (no surprise, the front suspension is borrowed from an Audi S3) It does affect the aerodynamics, but mostly by keeping airflow separated underneath the engine, promoting better airflow through the radiators and through the engine bay. It also keeps the engine very much cleaner, which you appreciate when you have to (for instance) change the starter motor.

As said above the under trays do service a purpose. There’s a slight improvement in aerodynamics, around town you wouldn’t notice but on the motorway without one there’d be a small increase in fuel usage.

The main advantage is protection, both from speed cushions (those pillow things in the middle of road) and the weather. With a car as old as the MK1’s don’t under estimable how important weather protection is. Apart from keeping it cleaner down there (always a good idea) it helps stop all the rubber and plastics degrading.

Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah, there was no way I'd remove it as I know from oil changes how much cleaner the tray keeps everything. I'll get busy with some cable ties then I think rather than replace it. If it get's any worse though I'll source a replacement.

TDIs definetly came with undertrays as I've stripped 4 Cupra / FR TDIs in the last year and they had them.
They act as a sound insulation as well keeping all of the crap out.

You can get a complete set on Ebay for around £60. I think there's around 4 different ones depending which engine you have.

I bought the undertray off the Bay (£45) but it was a cheap knock-off and didn’t fit right + I had to drill more holes in which only made it fall off quicker
Ended up biting the bullet and getting all from TPS
