4 Litres of oil gone in 1k miles - This is the reason I got

So i had my car at the garage 8 months ago due to a dead turbo. Got the turbo replaced with other recommended parts to prolong the life of the turbo. Put 4 litres of 5w-30 fully synthetic oil in my 2.0tdi BKD Altea engine only later to find out that 5w-40 is the recommended oil.

Anyways 1k miles later the car failed to start and indicated that oil levels were low, which was true as they were basically non-existant when i checked. Took it back to the same garage, put it on the ramp and we found large oil deposits near the driverside, said there was an oil leak. Was told to come back the next day for the full results and when i did i was told there was no leak and that the reason all my oil ran out so quickly was because of driving high speeds on the motorway. Ive never heard of such a thing before but im not mechanically inclined. The max i do on a motorway is 75 most of the time im going 70.

Sounds like bs to me but you never know.

Not a mechanic but I have a tuned car that puts out 34% more power than standard and I don't have any issues with burning oil. It gets hot and needs replacing more often but not leaking.

Ask them how they decided you were driving at high speed because this motor works in Germany where there are some stretches with no speed limits and i am sure when you bought the car there was not documentation you had to sign that you could not go over 20 MPH :)

where near the drivers side? as the boost pipe going into the intercooler leaks oil from the engine breather , which is normal and not excessive . from what i can remember the difference between 5w-30 and 5w-40 is the 5w-40 is thicker (dont quote me though) so only thing i can think of is a seal or gasket problem? but im no mechanic

The BKD engine is a PD diesel (I have the same engine) and needs specific oil - the SAE specs are not enough to tell you if its ok or not, you should look for VW spec 505.01 or 507.00. Anything that does not conform will risk damage to the engine.

However, your problem is not to do with oil specs, it's to do with what appears to be an incompetent garage. "the reason all my oil ran out so quickly was because of driving high speeds on the motorway" is the worst piece of fobbing off I've ever seen, and is utter and complete bullshit.

Losing 4 litres of oil in 1000 miles is an indication of an oil leak. I would suspect the pipes feeding the turbo, since they have been disturbed most recently. You would have to trace the leak back following the wet oil traces to see where it is coming from, the turbo is pretty much in the middle of the car. Otherwise, check the filter to see if they have tightened that up properly. If you have an undertray on (and you should), oil will pool in that before seeking the nearest place to drop out

mymumisaman, "the boost pipe going into the intercooler leaks oil from the engine breather" - while this can be true, not 4 litres in 1000 miles. You would expect a few drips, not a deluge.

true 4ltr in 1000 miles is excessive! . i didnt catch that in the post , so just assumed they took a look, seen the drip on the boost pipe and sussed that as the leak

im thinking either a split pipe or the sump plug isnt seated properly because thats not normal!
