Hi folks
I got a decent insurance quote a couple of weeks ago for my (64) 1.4 FR 150 ACT for about £240 fully comp. etc
Since then i sold that car and bought a (67) 1.4 125 xcellence.... I knew i would miss the drop in power but this car was a great price with only 1800 miles on the clock full leather and winter pack. Insurance £260
I enquired about a remap which would take my bhp up to about 163 and so requested a quote from my insurance .... boom £700

I made contact with a well know insurance company who specialized in mod cars mentioned on here and got £445 or £500 monthly

I am close to the 50 mark so not a boy racer type, clean license full NCB....... If i bought a car with stock 160 bhp there is no chance my insurance would be £500

Any factors reasons for this ..... it's kinda put me off the remap ;(

that's shocking .... and makes no sense

When I switched from FR 1.4 150 to Cupra 300, my insurance went up from 400 to 500 quid.
it's nothing if u take into account that the car has 2x power and 2x more expensive ....

I’ve been tempted to get my 1.8 TSi remapped (there’s a SuperChips nearby or Revo a half hour drive away) as improved oomph + economy sounds like a good deal for £499 but I haven’t got around to enquiring about how much my insurance premium would increase... sounds like it would’ve been cheaper to trade-in my FR for the Cupra 280 that local dealership had in stock at my last service, if that’s the sort of hike I’m likely to get quoted

Not necessarily the power that's the problem, but as soon as you declare mods you're put in the category of people who modify their cars.

Statistically people who modify their cars are seen as higher risk, hence the price increase.

FR 1.8 DSG - I got quoted an extra premium of £17.92 but XS going from £250 to £500 with Direct Line but that was limited to max performance increase of 20%...not sure how feasible that is ! Also late 40s thou!

It's a hard one, the mainstream insurance companies don't like modified cars, so they price accordingly whenever you try and add something. That jump does seem ridiculous though.

And then the companies who insure modified cars seem to think its not worth their time with something that isnt powerful to start off with or doesnt have a list of mods as long as your arm.

Was with Adrian Flux on my old car, it was running 400bhp with a massive mods list insured for big mileage and mods like for like, and it was £700, went to get a quote for my new 2 litre diesel, standard with less than half the power and they wanted £1600. Asked a couple of other similar companies and the story was the same.

Have a look around, specialist and non specialist though and I'm sure you will be able to find something reasonable, I wouldn't let it put you off though

Be careful of the 250nm torque limit on the DSG. When I looked 2 years ago you couldn't safely remap the DSG, maybe things have changed :)

Just to add my bit in, when I declared my stage 2 performance mods including software, my premium went up about £70 at the time. the mods added 50% more BHP than stock. This was about 2 years, maybe 3 years ago so at the time was about 33.

Maybe it's just an insurance lottery, but mentioned already here, modifying a car is a lot different to just owning a high performance car.

It is more likely something to do with the amount of recorded accidents etc in your area rather than anything else.

Admiral quoted me £27 extra for a remap on my Cupra 280, my premium is only £212 anyway which seems low considering the capabilities of the car.

Insurance risk to anyone other than an actuary is a bit illogical

Majority of insurance companies will charge more for a policy to cover a power modified car compared to a car designed from the factory with the same or more power.

The factory car has usually had the brakes & suspension brought in line with the power.
The modified car ( if just a remap ) will possibly be at the limit of its brakes/suspension now.

Having worked for an insurance broker a while back I can’t remember them having any specific information regarding the technical tolerances of factory parts.

If this were the case you could say you have uprated the brakes and suspension to cope with the increased bhp to bring the premium back down but that doesn’t happen. If you put £4K worth of new suspension parts on your car I expect the premium would go up.

in my view insurance companies are like bookies they work on odds and the size of the book.

What I'm saying is that a Cupra was designed for its 300ps and the insurance accept that as a known risk.
If you hypothetically tuned a 1.8FR to 300ps ( even with brakes and suspension done ) - it is an unknown risk factor.

Ditto! I phoned them up and was given a range of percentages to choose from but when I said about 30% they couldn’t actually provide me with a quote as the system wouldn’t permit anything above 20%

I might go back to Liverpool Victoria, as their online quotation was only a few quid more when I clicked the box for engine remapping and doesn’t appear to have a restriction on the % power increase...

FWIW... On the Revo website it’s stated that they limit the torque to 300-320Nm when remapping the DQ200 (as opposed to figures of 350-376Nm for the manual shift).

I also see that Shark have a DSG remap available that increases the torque limiter...
