Shall I remap? Pros and cons of remapping? Can you take the car back normal or wil it stay remapped?

Hi all just purchased a seat for the first time and I pick it up Saturday morning, it is a-

Seat Leon FR 1.4 eco Tsi 5door
65 plate only 11,900 miles

After test driving the car I noticed how powerful it was for such a small engine and i love that. But I think we can all agree you can never have to much power! I was thinking of getting a remap but never actually done it before.

My question is if I remap the car can you undo that or will it stay like it forever.

What are the pros and cons to this as the older bloke at work has a remapped car and he said you can only put the expensive upgraded petrol in and never the standard (I do that regardless) what else is there to look for if I am getting this done. I will do this to the car when it runs out of warranty bof course.

Thanks

Marcus

I've just bought the same car and thinking of taking the same route. I need to read up some more. The Revo stage 1 and replacement panel filter or induction kit sounds like a good option. I'm also wondering what if any, extra strain it might put on the mechanics. I'll be interested in the replies

Stick around man see what comes of it. I’m hoping the positives weigh out the negatives because if it means having to upgrade loads of other things to handle the remap I wouldn’t bother I would just buy a faster car standard in a few years.

Generally speaking you can undo a remap and most places will charge to remove it but they’re almost always removable with no residual effects.

As for the mechanics, again generally speaking the factory components of the vehicle should be able to handle a stage 1 remap which requires little to no further mods to the mechanics. In addition to extra power (bhp & Nm) you should also see increased mpg but make sure you specifically ask about this when buying the remap.
There are many different ‘types’ of remaps, each offering a different ‘benefit’ to the vehicle and driver, research here is crucial I’d suggest.

Now, from personal experience, I’ve got the MK3 Leon 2.0l TDI FR remapped to stage 1 with zero additional upgrades and it’s the best thing to happen to the car. It’s got more power than I know what to do with and the fuel economy is unreal, mid 50’s around town, more on motorways, of course tyre wear increases if I choose to liven it up in party mode but that’s par for the course.
Also, common sense says that if you hammer your vehicle constantly, especially if it’s been remapped, then the components will wear out quicker but again that’s fair game.

Remapping is always subjective and only you can decide if it’s right for you to do, listen to other opinions, research and decide if it’s for you.

Whatever you decide, good luck and welcome to the FR game!

Have you considered a tuning box? These can now be controlled with an app on your phone allowing you to turn it on and off, change the map etc without opening the bonnet.

No mentions the void warranty?
Ok...

That’s why I said research. Some people who want to remap may be out of their warranty period, some won’t.
Could also mention insurance declaration, some people will declare, some won’t? Again...research.

Well it all makes sense when you put it like that, see how it goes. I guess I will just keep looking around at opinions over the next 6 months till my warranty is up then I will maybe decide. Also another factor is my wife has to drive it to work and back as we share it for at least 2 more years, so that shall be fun to watch considering she **** herself in my old 1.4 Fiesta lol

Have you got any links to any makes or websites that’s worth looking into as a starting point mate?

These are the company I have been looking at due to the convenience of the app. Excuse the name, they do boxes for petrols too.

There are pros and cons of tuning boxes compared to a remap and in the end it’s personal preference but there is no doubt it offers more flexibility, especially with a car still with warranty.

Ok...

Seat don’t instantly check.
If you have issue with say the steering or something non engine related and you got a map on it. It won’t void it. The only way you can void it if it’s engine related but they’ll cover the other non modified bits. And they wouldn’t know by looking unless you was like at stage 3 where it’s obvious the turbo etc is bigger. They’d have to go through the ecu before they’d realise on a stage 1.

P.s this a conversation I had with front desks at servicing. Her words not mine.

Definitely some food for thought

I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the 1.4l 150 as standard, but a little extra oomph would be the icing on the cake.

I think I will wait until my years warranty is up. From the response so far, all great input... I'd say a stage 1 is on the cards for me :)

Best of luck mate

There is the legendary TD1 flag thing.
On that sense, and for a car under warranty, a tuning box might be a better option.
Nonetheless, tuning boxes are not the ideal tuning solutions.
My car is under warranty and after I did some reading on tuning boxes, I will wait for the warranty to expire and only then remap with a APR stage 1 tune.
On my particular case I wait because I have an extended warranty and want to take advantage of it.
Dealer around is not so friendly... They will use any excuse they can even to get out of legitimate claims, so I want no risks.

With regards to warranty the dealer does not have to check as if its connected to the online systems it will be checked automatically is my understanding.

Dealers can also mark the TD1 Flag if they see stuff that makes them think its been done.

Revo are explicit in saying that you can't hide a map from VAG so be warned.

Also if you are on a Lease deal you not only run the risk of Warranty failure but also Lease agreement so again be aware.

Insurance company also need to be informed or you are also at risk of ending up driving a car that is not insured (because you did not declare the mod)

Are you going to get caught is a matter of luck in my view but its a risk you have to accept if you do it during warranty period.

I considered it for a while on my mk2 1.9tdi and I’ve now added it to the insurance and I’m getting it done start of next month. With it being a 2007 plate I’m guessing that I’m going to need the clutch replacing at some point.

Other than that....I’ve always wanted a fast car and to me a stage 1 on the 1.9tdi is going to feel fast, all at decent economy, not much extra on insurance and on a car bought for £2k

Diesel power!

Diesel power indeed! The torque alone is worth a diesel, but get one remapped and You’ll be peeling your cheeks off the back seats haha

Did I see on here somewhere in another thread that the manual gearbox on the 1.4s are also at their torque limit? Meaning a new clutch sooner and an upgraded one when it does need replacing?

I tend to agree. I've done the modified car/bike thing, and it's often a pain in the arse. I haven't any experience with SEATs, but a mate had his Ducati flashed and it turned into a gas guzzling pig. It's all down to the skill/knowledge of the Tech. As for owner changeable tuning boxes,
looking at the level of ignorance often seen in all vehicle forums, I wouldn't touch a car that's got one.
