FR TDI oil leak after service

Hi All,

I dropped in my 2012 CR TDI 170 into the main dealer for a major service and timing belt. Car has 100k mile on it.
That was two weeks ago and yesterday the oil level light came on. I checked and the drip stick was dry!!!
I put about 1.5 litres of oil into the car and drove straight to the dealer. They have had it 24hrs now and say they can identify the source of the oil leak.

Obviously this a major concern as before the service the car never used any oil in over 25k miles of my use.

I have two questions.

1. How bad is it for the engine for it to be ran with low oil (needed only 1.5 litres to get it back to the full mark)
2. What could they have done that would cause the lead, I assume they over tightened the oil filter and damaged the plastic.

Thanks

So what is the source of the leak ?

there is only so many reasons that it used that much oil:
1, they did not put any in at the service (I always check when I pick up the car from the service)
2, it is burning oil, ( evidence bluey smoke out of exhaust)
3, they did put oil in but forgot the sump plug
4, you will have to tell what they said ?

Should says that they can't identify the leak which is very concerning.

There is sign of a oil leak on my drive so was leaking for the two weeks I guess. If they forgot the sump plug it wouldn't have taken two weeks to drop the oil. Leak is from higher up the engine.
I don't remember seeing any smoke, it wasn't burning oil before the service. Would it burn through 1.5 litres in less than 1,000 miles?

The only other thought, have you checked your coolant for any contamination ?

They said that they would call me bwbain the morning with an update.
Sorry mate you need to watch your spell checker/predictive text !
I know its too late now but I have never trusted main dealers all the seem to want is the money and as least work as they can get away with, but what I suggest when it goes in check that all is in place and when you go to pick up etc make sure it is there (and check oil level) before you leave, and also if you have a problem later look at things like check the oil and water levels just so at least you know things before they try and tell you whats not right.
I only have servicing from main dealers while in warranty after that its either a known back street garage or do it myself, with all the vehicles and miles I have done over the years I have never topped up between services.
so when you do get some info from the garage please let us know the out come ?

We haven't many specialist servicing places in Ireland. So away from main dealers I usually find them as very doggy. Hence when getting the timing belt done I went to the dealer.

Didn't think they would cause an oil leak on my car. It's just a service it was getting.

1.5 litres in 2 weeks is alot to lose, it should be plainly obvious where it's leaking from unless it's pissed out so much the entire engine is covered.

Is the engine covered in oil?? The undertray should be sodden with the stuff too.
If not then they clearly under-filled it when doing the service, probably had the apprentice do it and he didn't bother to check his work.

Did you check after getting back....i think whats happened ,they filled after swapping oil filter and checked level without running ...and needed top up...you,ve ran it low till was too low to bring light on.....this would explain no leaks or obvious problems....hopefully theres no lasting damage...always check after service...
