Looking at buying a 2014-2016 FR in either the 2.0l diesel 150 bhp / 185 bop or 1.4 petrol engine, the decision will be swayed by MPG and so I’m wondering what people actually get out of these engines day to day.

It depends on the type of journey that you are doing.

My 184 will get just over 30 mpg around town if I'm lucky, the stop start driving kills the mpg, though you could argue that its not what it was designed for anyway. On the motorway at a 70ish cruise it will return between 50 and 55mpg quite easily. In the average speed checks on the m23 at the moment sat at 50 the trip computer will give readings of around 60mpg which though most likely not accurate is still quite impressive.

I'm getting around 45-48 on shorter journeys to work etc in my 184. On longer runs can easily top 60mpg.

hi terrif,
i have had my 1.4TSI 125ps Leon SE for 2 weeks and averaged on the MFD 44.5 mpg around town, and on the 150 mile drive back from Southampton ( b-roads and a stretch of the m5) i was averaging 52.2mpg, it has a decent amount of torque for a small petrol unit.
also has plenty of poke for overtaking too, plus if your not doing big miles the petrol is a good choice.

I usually average 50mpg bang on for each tank in my 184. That's 500 miles per fill up.

I can see 55-60 if I try but it's boring. I like to make progress.

To be honest once you take the difference in cost of petrol and diesel there's really not a lot in it.
Petrol engine is more refined/better around town.
Diesel 184 is faster and has a better suspension set up and brakes.

The diesel units will be worse around town but will be better for motorway driving

1.4 TSI 140hp is an excellent engine. Its fun but able to go with very little fuel. My best motorway run was 65mpg.

Posted this last October

My 1.4 ACT ST is 4 years old today so have worked out my annual stats.
Total mileage is now 45044 with 11983 covered in the last 12 months.
Computer says an average mpg of 47.9 this year, actual figure is 46.5.
Over the 4 years computer says 47.2, actual is 45.2.
I do a fairly mixed mileage of town driving and longer trips and I also tow a caravan for about a thousand miles a year.
Car has been very reliable, no dramas.

My 1.4 TSI ACT 2015 is averaging around 37mpg for daily drive which is small journeys of mixed rush hour commute.

On longer trips I have had low 40s but no better and never into 50s. Normally get 400-430 miles from a tank.

Thank you for the responses everyone - test drove a few and decided on the 2.0 diesel 184 bhp model! Should be collecting tomorrow!

Had a 2.0TDI 150DSG before.
London City (medium traffic) 38-43mpg
London City (light to no traffic, eg..Sun 8am) 45-50mpg
Extra Urban (40-50mph roads) 60+ mpg
Motorway (~70mph) just under 60mpg

After that I had a 1.0EcoTsi Ibiza DSG
all values I would get the same (incidentally, the official mpg were both 64)
except on Motorways ~70mph I would get low 50s mpg.

Exactly same as me. I get between 430 and 450 miles per tank if i'm lucky. My daily 70 mile round trip is mostly motorway. It works out to 40-42 mpg.

If i'm honest even if the diesel gave me over 50 mpg I would still pick the 1.4 tsi. Had plenty of diesels and the petrol is a nice balance between refinement, nippyness and economy
