So I've got a 2014 Cupra but annoyingly I wanted to be able to access my Spotify playlists and have a bit more control but it seems the head unit just won't do it. Does anyone have a solution or am I doing something wrong or need a bit of kit to make it work?

I've tried an iPhone 5S plugged directly into the USB...nope, over bluetooth it'll stream and let me change tracks but nothing else. I've also tried my Huawei P30 Pro in the USB and bluetooth but same again.

It's very annoying as my 1 series prior to this (2013) let me control it and access playlists etc. I was sure the Cupra could do it?

I’m pretty sure you need Full Link to be able to do what you like. This wasn’t available until mid 2016 models do that may be the reason you can’t control as you like.

Oh poop! There must be a way round this surely. I don't want to change the head unit just for that sort of connectivity.

Apparently Spotify are releasing some hardware for the car. Not a new head unit. It connects to existing kit. Can’t remember where I read that. Might be an option? Not sure when it’s out.

Edit - found this. It's called Car Thing but isn't as close to being available as I recalled. Just started limited testing in US.

I had a MY16 280 and can confirm that full link was the only OEM method to do what you're asking.
I used the Spotify app through Android Auto.

I do similar now with YouTube premium/music through Android Auto.

Otherwise it was selecting the playlist on my phone and using Bluetooth streaming.

Yep as stated you need the full link and CarPlay I must admit is much better now on iOS 13 beta shows album art and looks much more than just a mirrored image

I’m still on iOS 12.3.1!!

Does iOS13 show album art as a filtered background image or full image?

Also how did you get iOS13 Beta?

The black shown in the pic. Mounted in the cubby under the climate controls.
On the pre facelift it was there.
Some still required a hardware change as well as a code.

Are dealerships the only way to go about getting it activated? My 2016 FR has the USB in the centre console and the option for it in the MIB but £230 is far too much in my opinion, there were some guys in London that could do it for £200 but it'd cost me more than the £30 difference to get down there and back

Pretty certain it’s a Dealer only activation. You could try another dealer and see if they charger lower. Others have had it done at Dealers for between £150 and £250. Don’t understand the costing difference though.
