Fair price?

Hi guys,

Admins please let me know if this is the wrong place for this question, please be aware this isn’t a for sale post.

I’m looking to get some input from enthusiasts on how much my car is worth right now.

It’s a Grey MK1 facelift 2005 Cupra 1.8T 20v. 125k miles. Has never let me down, and always passed MOTs. We’ve looked after it mechanically, serviced as we should, cambelt etc changed twice so far, new clutch and flywheel 20k ago. Always warmed up and down. It’s a joy to drive and there’s no issues in that side of things. No rust. Electric leather seats in fair condition. It’s standard, never been remapped or abused to my knowledge and I’ve had it since 40k

the bad parts: 1 fog light recently smashed I think by a stone chip, the car has been scuffed twice this year and has what looks like a long key mark down one side. Finally since some heavy rain there is a small lake in the rear footwell.

It breaks my heart but I don’t have the cash to get these issues fixed right now. I have had the door seal issue twice before and had it fixed and repaired but I just don’t have the motivation or money to resolve this a 3rd time and that’s really why I’m selling.

I really don’t want to scrap it or anything as its been a great car and I know it’s solid other than those issues.

there’s not that many for sale right now so difficult to get a market value, does anyone have any advice on a fair price if I’m considering selling it soon?

cheers

Jump on autotrader and see what a similar car/s is up for.

We're all biased on here as we love Leon's! ;)

Thanks guys. It’s a shame one of the seals has gone again, it’s going to be wet in there for a while, which might put buyers off but we’ll see. Maybe someone will track it instead. Cheers!

Where abouts are you based? I could get the water out with a carpet vac and probably do something with the scuffs and scratch depending on how bad it is? Happy to help if I can.

As others have said, prices are ow now due to high tax/insurance. If she still runs well, you could repair all the door seals for less than £20 if you did it yourself. It only takes 45 mins per door. Was it repaired with the proper butyl rubber?

In all honesty you can pick the same colour and issues for about 500/600, good one is 1200 at best. Some want silly money for low milage ones but there in dream Land.
Road tax is putting me off tbh.
Mk2 tfsi is looking better and better every day and they can be had for £1500 without issues.
I picked up a 320d the other day for the other half (won't last long) and that's £200 a year road tax and if I remap it I'll get the same power level more torque and more comfort and I paid a grand. 06 plate e90. Second hand car market is changing pretty quick with what you can buy for a grand.

I've had two Cupra now
First one £360 with 96k full service
Second was £220 in a deal with other stuff with 132k.
Point is....the blue ones are worthless now.

I’m on the Norfolk Suffolk border so likely a fair distance from you, thanks for the offer though, I’ve ripped up the carpets and underlay now and sponged as much out as I can, there was ALOT. I had to do this before. I’ll dry it out, find another garage to reseal everything and then de-Mold it with a spray before putting it all back. It’s a massive pain and a bit of a cost but it’s still cheaper than buying a new car that I’m not going to be so fond of. Fingers crossed the rain stays away!

I’ve taken the doors apart before to replace the window regulators, and whilst that was a pain I don’t think just sealing them would be too much of a job. I don’t know what the two garages before had used, both we’re supposed to be VW specialists but neither knew about this issue so who knows. To be fair I don’t think it’s the same windows chasing the problem. I should have got them all done at the same time, however when I bought it the guy told me he had it done so didn’t think I would need to. This is all assuming it’s the same issue and not water getting in from elsewhere

If you do it yourself with the butyl rubber then it should last the life of the car. Most garages seem to use a silcone type sealant and it's crap. The stuff in the link is used for roofs and boats.

Update, since you guys gave me some good advice. Decided to keep her, I’m not ready to part with her yet. I have now replaced the rear door seal with butyl. Not my best DIY job as I struggled to keep the butyl strip behind the panel in a few places, and it squeezed out a bit as I tightened it up, but on stress testing it the seal is good and no water leaking from there. The drainage holes in the bottom seal were gunked up too so cleared that, and I’m going to do the rest once we get a dry spell. Cheers again guys

Glad to hear you decided to sort her out rather than sell her. The butyl is always tricky to get perfect, but as long as i's watertight that's all that really matters. I think a bit squeezing out is a good sign that the gap is compleatly filled in my mind, it's not like anyone can see it behind the panel anyway.

Good news, I always hate to hear a car being let go when a teeny wee bit of TLC would keep it good.
As for the butyl tape, good tip is to keep it cold before applying it as it won’t stretch & stick as bad (I put mine in freezer for an hour before using and it’s perfect to work with).
