Rear wheel bearings

Had a service done the other day and was told the rear bearings are on the way out ( they're unsure if I'll pass an mot in January with the condition of them).

Been quoted £600 by my local seat dealer to get them replaced - seems a little steep in my opinion.

Are they that difficult to change yourself? Or is there a cheaper alternative?

Not exactly the best time of year to be spending that kind of money especially when I was about to get 4 new tyres

Time to visit a VAG indy specialist for a second opinion and estimate, as an example Eurocarparts show £104 a side for mine at the moment before applying one of their famous discounts!

I did the rear bearings on my old mk2 Clio, not sure if it is comparable but it was doable on the driveway if a slight pain in the ass. A garage with a hydraulic press would have very easily been able to get each side done in 30min tops.

Maybe worth checking if it's a fairly simple job on YouTube (as with most things in life, nomatter what it is someone has done it before) if you're up for the challenge? If not I would be inclined to call BS at anything over say 2hrs labor from a garage.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys, struggling to find a part number since seat won't give me the number. What's the best way to find out?

Fairly sure the wheel bearings and rear hub come as one unit on the Leon.
The ABS reluctor ring is inside the bearing.

This is just an example one from eurocarparts
https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/aftermarket-wheel-bearing-kit-628441361

This type of bearing kit is less than 30 mins a side and easily done on the drive if you have a decent tool kit.
Cheers, probably me being fussy but does anyone have any reviews on after market ones? I'll do some researching anyway

SEAT don't make bearings - they will buy them in.

Eurocarparts usually offer a couple of options.
One will be unbranded
One will be branded ( SKF, NTN, FAG etc )

Also, a very high percentage of VW Group cars need wheel bearing replaced (front and/or rear) very early in their life time, so I'd not be too picky about which "proper" bearings to use, as it looks like VW Group don't!

SKF and FAG are okay by me - I think.

It's tighter than I expected.

The book says :

6 - Bolt
❑ Always renew after removing
❑ Before securing, clean threads in stub axle using a thread tap
❑ 200 Nm +90°
