Hi,

I have seen a couple of petrol TSI Leons around 45k miles and was wondering what the service schedule was especially concerning the timing belt/chain?

I would prefer a 1.8 but there's only one around so probably end up with a 1.4.

Also if there is anything else worth noting or looking out for in regards to buying one of these.

I currently have a Mk 2 (2007) Leon so would prefer to stick with the model although I won't be doing Diesel again.

Regards

In theory, these direct injection engines can start to suffer from carbon fouling of the inlet valves around 50K miles but I'm not hearing about many people who are actually having issues. It's worth knowing about though.

Other than that it's all pretty standard and nothing to worry about.

1.4 has a belt. Every 60k miles or 5 years, whichever come first.

1.8 has a chain, so not change necessary. Some will do a change around 120k miles but officially it’s not necessary.

Regarding the carbon buildup which Mr Pig referred to, the 1.8 has port and direct injection so carbon buildup shouldn’t be such an issue on that engine. The 1.4 is direct injection only, so could and does happen. It’s an easy enough fix though, should it need removing.

With regard to general things to watch out for:
-cracked tail lights leading to moisture inside
-dust inside front headlights
-creaking/squeaking interior trim
-missing sat nav sd card

The 1.4 tsi vs 1.8 tsi discussion has been had many times on the forum, if you search for that you’ll find pages of info and opinions to sift through, if you’re interested in learning more.

Check out the difference in road tax between 1.4 and 1.8 as well, the salesman will keep that one secret!
Yea I did notice that, a fair old jump. I'd rather pay the extra though. I've got 140BHP in my old 2.0 TDI and was wanting more power so I'm still paying similar tax for more so not too bothered.

A good bit of advice all the same though, ta.
