After seeing some nice Leons with black wheels I've had a quick look around for prices for spraying my standard FR 17" wheels.

One company (The Wheel Specialist in Chester) quoted a final price of £350 for the four powder coated. I don't know if this is a good price so first of all does anyone think it is and second question is if not has anyone any experience in this area and couend anyone?

My FR is Red and when I've photo-shoppped a set of Black wheels on its looked nice.

Cheers!

I usually use Lepsons prices as a guide to what you’d pay for a top quality job - Lepsons are reputed to be one of the best wheel refurb companies in the UK. Link to the price section of their website below:
https://www.lepsons.com/prices/

Lessons charge £266+VAT (so £319.20 total) for a set of 4 wheels for wheels up to 18” in diameter. They make an extra charge if the tyres need to be removed and refitted. So I’d say that the price you’ve been quoted looks to be thereabouts for a good quality refurbishment.

Although the black wheels / red car combination looks good, and wheel colour is very much a personal choice, I’m not a big fan of black wheels - especially if the wheels are gloss black, as you get many of the same disadvantages as you do with a black car;
  • they only really look clean just after the car has been washed.
  • after a few miles driving, they’re covered in a layer of brake dust and road dust, making them look dull - and in some cases, almost a rusty brown colour.
  • they’re prone to showing scratch and swirl marks.
With black, the detail of the wheel’s design is often ‘lost’ unless you’re close up to the car, and the tyres can look a dirty grey unless they’re regularly dressed with an appropriate tyre dressing.

IMO, wheels with wide spokes like the standard 17” wheels on the (pre-facelift) FR look better in a lighter colour and don’t really suit black, which makes wide spoked wheels look ‘heavy’. I think that a mid-anthracite grey is a good alternative to black, and IMO looks great with red. Again, just my opinion, and it’s good we don’t all like the same thing, otherwise life would get boring.

Black wheels are brilliant IF you spend a lot of time on prep work.

Ceramic coating and good wheel wax bud.

No issues with mine

Not used the wheel Specilist in Chester but used the same company in Manchester.
Top job and done the same day. Had 5 sets of wheels done there over the years and can’t fault them.

Thanks, very helpful reply and some good points raised that I hadn't thought about. I am still a bit undecided about it as it seems a shame to lose the silver, apart from a couple of kerb marks they are in good shape. I've just seen a couple of black wheels about and they do look nice. When clean though like you said but I suppose you could say that for a lot of colours.

My tyres aren't particularly black either. I've tried restorer (albeit cheap stuff) and they are still quite 'grey'. Obviously that would only affect me until new tyre time though.

Thanks again for your reply.
