Hey there,

A While back, i posted a thread stating that me bud had a new LCR and that when we had a rumble i was quicker than him in my 330ci. Since then, and a few £££ here and there spent on a revo for the LCR, weve have had some more runs! Just wanted to point out that it is still quite a close race and not so much of a beating like some of you guys with the chipped LCR were stating. Considering 231 vs about 265-70 bhp and a massive weight disadvantage to the BM, i was a little dissapointed with the performance of the LCR. We swapped cars and the same sort of outcome. Off the line 330ci is quicker to 60. Mid range the LCR is faster (1-1.5 car length) and silly speeds quite even! I think a well driven 330ci is more than a match for some of the tuned LCR out there!

Must say that this post has certainly wound up a few people. I to lust after an M3, but lets be realistic, i ain,t gonna spend 40K on a motor so it will never happen. I can however pass on my experience.

A mate popped by with his chipped/induction kittted 330ci. We had a good play and the results were;

chipped 330i v chipped LCR.(speed in km,s off course)

0 to 60 - bit quicker. ie better traction.

60 to 120 - LCR definately quicker. I had to come of the throttle several times to avoid ramming, could easily have gone past if traffic had allowed.

120+ - evens. rolled up to 155 and the gap stayed the same(BMW following).

Having driven the BMW, i would say its a deceptively fast car but lacks the thrills the LCR gives.

330d's were easy prey even the newer 204bhp ones.
Mine is 204 bhp/302lbft mark gotta agree feels same as my stock lcr in places but not out right, chipped mode on lcr felt loads quicker, although the 6 pot is that smooth i have set limiter to 85mph, which bleeped like fek to and from lakes @ weekend, car full criusing @ said speed, stop start / M6 etc 38 MPG  as you dont realise how fast you are going, due to excellent NVH etc..........

Amazing how people treat you different though in everyday life though, with certain car badges. gotta say until you,ve owned and lived with a 3 series you aint a clue what a w@nker/rep image you have just aqcuired ,dont bother me though, love the derv powered engine and RWD, 1st time i have owned a RWD, still learning lol

Now that is a freekin quick diesel...:)

Vern...The one thing I remember about my Merc driving days is that NOBODY EVER LET YOU OUT AT A JUNCTION..

Jealousy is a very powerful emotion obviously..

I was amazed when drove my first Cupra that some traffic stopped to let me out of a side street even though they had right of way through a set of traffic lights...It was very weird and a culture shock.
In the Mercs I kept finding I had to let people through even when I had right of way because they'd just keep driving straight towards me and someone had to stop.
As you say the refinement does take some of the sporting appeal away..When I had my Mercs I used to look forward to the weekends when I could drive my wife's 8v Ibiza Cupra.

i got to agree with vern the 330 d is bloody quick i could keep up with 1 in my chipped 130 but it was a estate!! personally i would think the 330d is nicer (if a bit slower than the petrol) than the 330ci and once chipped well :-o !!

He has 7000 miles on it now. I think thats pretty much run in, and come on i know what a drag race entails. Still i lost and admittted defeat.

Don't want to get into the arguement about M3 .vs. LCR but according to the stealers the VAG 1.8T engine can still be running in when you hit 20k. I noticed a difference in performance/pick-up around the 10-12k mark.

:D Mark how true is that...........................
Yeah leon was let out of side roads/given nod @ mini roundabouts etc, now in BMW no chance lol, noticed this on first day as bit of a shock, thinking it was in my head NOT, as continued ever since :( first day i got it, a van who comes down our street forced me on to a low berb as he swung around a parked car on HIS side from a dead stop too, LMAO car was very shiney though just picked it up, maybe the private plate dont help either my name being richard vernon reg plate = R1**CH.V being pointed out as even though my it's my name others dont know this and think rich and v = 2 fingers up  Had this plate on 1.8t golf GTI no probs, priced up VERN plate V1ERN £3k+ i'll spend that on a cheap ibiza with B/T next year i think

Mark do you not regret leaving the Merc you ordered for the Audi? although though this is a great car 2.0t fsi, i know you liked your mercs and have had a few.

P.S Gemma gets let out of junctions more now, so she tells me, all by men never women, she never noticed this in the LCR how weird , mind you she is Blonde

I didn't to be honest....
I'm happy she's happy with her A3 as thats saved me about 15k.
Despite the new slk design I'm still not convinced its a MANS car.
I'd have been more upset if she'd made me cancel a 350z for the A3 to be honest.
I suppose because I've had mercs thats part of the reason I'm not really missing them..
efficiency and very surprising ability they have .. character they haven't

For 40k my money would probably have head for a second hand Maserati or 911 if I'd been choosing..or with a total free choice a decent trackday car like a westfield , radical or a Caterham and a new Cupra R to pull the trailer

Slight thread detour, but..... I don't get this fascination with Merc's?

I spent a day at a Merc dealer as a temp driver a few years back and drove loads of different C-Class'es and E-Class'es and one of those horrible ML-500 4x4 jobbies, result = I absolutely hated them all!!!

Most of the cars were automatic's and whats with the handbrake with a lever coming out of the dash?

My ex-boss had a E320 and it was so wallowy going round bends it was unbelievable, but then again I guess Merc's are aimed at drivers who don't care too much about handling etc.... more about comfort?

The only one I would buy (if I had the money) is the 'Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren'

No worries on detour rob, it's in gotc/syw :)

interesting on mercs, if you have driven a few, i have not they have a follwing though, remember seeing a 2.3 16 190  think tuned by coswoth when a was younger looked well went even better.

some one paid £37K mark for my 330d 5 months sgo, i paid a bit less, yeah i could have a porker or 2 new lcr's :D ,but wanted a derv and summat i aint had before inc RWD(really wanted to B/t the lcr but mrs was up and down on idea as our only car, as i have a brand new van with fuel card and un ltd use, she wanted somthing less highly strung, track day stuff is nice but i would love a 1.8t ibiza stripped out, roll cage and a gt28rs "upit" for the sunday morning thing
may trade up to 335D if do it in saloon and man when it arrives next year, prob slushmatic due to torque

That vid is Ant and Pete from the Gumball isnt it? Very quick car, the in gear acceleration embarasses many quicker cars as shown on their gumball vids. That thing flies between 100 and 130
