S3 - New turbo

Hi,

I drive an S3 with a worn turbo

I'm concidering replacing the turbo myself, can anyone tell me which one I need? I think it is the KKK K04 but I need to make sure before I invest.

Also can anyone recommend where I can buy a replacement or get mine reconditioned?

Cheers,

James

Well I would be very grateful if anyone can suggested a cheaper fix but the local Audi specialist suggested the turbo because of the following............

Engine is using A LOT of oil - a couple of litres every 1k. This shows itself as blue smoke only at idle rather than acceleration.

Loss of power throughout rev range.

Quite loud rattling sound from head mainly under load (apparently tappets due to oil being lost through turbo)

Strange rev characteristics (revs suddenly drop when clutched is pressed, jerky power)

Traction light comes on occasionally after cruising at 80ish then suddenly taking foot of accelerator and car goes into limp.

The above two problems apparently due to sensors being covered in oil and giving weird signals. I've checked Maf and its oily, aparently lambda too.

the maf will be oily due to a oil rich induction (i take it you have an induction kit of some sorts?)
lambda sensor, if its got oil on it theres one hell of a problem.
perhaps its time for a big turbo conversion! go on, you know you want to.

Cheers for the help but no, I don't have an induction kit, car is completely standard.

I'd love a big turbo but with remap as well its way out of my budget.

Can anyone recomend anywhere to get a replacement or rebuilt turbo?

oil from breather system can overload and contaminate MAF also from DV blow back.

That's obscene, my local Audi specialist will supply and fit a recon turbo to an S3 for £800. There's gotta be 5 hours labour in there so that'd make the blower about £500.

I'd check places that do big-turbo conversions, they may be able to put you in touch with somebody with a used/low mileage KO4...

Hi guys,

I've found a K04 from an Audi TT but the reference number on the turbo says: K04-020BE5008626.

Does anyone know if this should fit my S3?

Getting a little desperate now, i sent my old turbo off to Catts&Carbs/Midland turbo - they said the shaft is o.k but the housing is cracked so it can't be repaired. I feel sick. :censored:

Any help/addvice greatly appreciated.

Oh no the guys just got back to me again - he works for VW parts and says this won't actually fit because he computer tells him its only for cars without ESP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely all Seats and Audis using the 1.8 turbo use ESP especially the TT which this turbo is from?????

the k04-020 is the earliest version of the k04 as they were superseeded by the k04-022 and the k04-023 but fitment is the same

So you think this should fit my S3 without any problems? I don't understand why this guy thinks it will only fit none-esp models?

Thanks

Not being funny... you are more than welcome here, but have you tried posting into an audi forum? You may have more joy, someone with an S3 is bound to have done a big T conversion and may have one knocking around.

Err...cheers, yeah I use the Audi forum on Tyre Smoke but you guys here seem to have far better technical knowledge and as the cars are basically the same i thought it made sense. Someone on another forum also recommended this site - its certainly the only place i could find with a guide to removing the turbo.
