Mine did the exact same thing and it was crank sensor. Sometimes you'll get a cam sensor code when really it's actually the crank sensor going down apparently.

Just bought a set of BAM injectors to have them re-conned (det' issue and it feels like it's pulling a bit of timing occasionally) then I'm going to pop them in my AMK. The fella I bought them from seemed to think I might need to put a spacer washer behind the rail to stand them off a bit...

Just smells like good old fashioned petrol vapour. I've had a quick look over the petrol hoses and they seem dry and in reasonable condition, though as you rightly point out they are fairly old and I don't think renewing them would hurt. The smell does seem to be coming from the evap' canister...
