Fixed! Took about an hour to get the bumper off because of some awkwardly positioned screws and a car that's just too low - but once off, headlight came out in seconds - cleaned the pipe up and fitted the new one. Clips back on, headlight in and bumper on in about 10 minutes. I'm going to take...

Yup, sounds about right what happened. Thing that made me thing exhaust was the blowing sound, but could a blown cooler pipe have the same effect?
