Overheating when air con is on

Cooling fans should always kick in before 100 deg ! Basically the engine temp should never budge off 90 regardless. Check the fuses on top of the battery (under the plastic flap) - one of the 30A is for the engine cooling fans. Common fault on the V5. Cheers. EDIT : Even if no signs of...

    New V5 Owner

Yep, I've had both a 150 and a 170. I would compare the 2 as a similar debate to the 8V v 16V. 150 10V has more low down grunt where as the 20V needs a bit more revs to get the most from it. I could get the 10V off the mark quicker than the 20V but then mid-range on the 20V would start...

    New V5 Owner

Agreed - would be a 170bhp 20V on a 2002 plate - unless it was sat unregisted for a year when built. Easiest way to tell for sure IMO is : 1) Open the bonnet 2) Throttle cable running across top of engine cover =150 10V 3) No throttle cable running across top of engine cover = 170 20V...

    How stupid am I?

No problem. Always better when you have a bit more time - and as you say at least they are working of sorts. (just have to perform a comprehensive screen wash should you encounter a police patrol with nothing better to do ;) ) Just one train of thought then - would it be worth unhooking...

    How stupid am I?

I'm with you now :D I *think* I recall the linkage arms (the pop fit bits that turn the circular movement into lateral movement) being horizontal in the parked position. Did you try that ? And, as the linkage translates one single full rotation into an up then down stroke did you try them...

    How stupid am I?

Now your really testing my memory ! Apologies if I'm stating the obvious - but if it is just a case of the wipers parking in the middle of the screen - is it not just a case of popping the wiper arms off and re-attaching in the parked position onto the splined spindles ? PS. Go careful...

    How stupid am I?

Probably the linkage that has seized. I had this on my old V5. Basically, disconnect the electrical connections to the motor, then unbolt and remove the whole linkage with motor attached. Then remove the motor from the linkage. You will then be able to test the linkage by hand - should...

Differences between 1.9 PDs and newer 2.0 engines

B7 chassis A4's (introduced 05) are 2.0 16V no DPF. (And the S-Line model in quartz grey looks the absolute nuts :p ) As I understand it the new A4 2.0 TDI Special Edition (170bhp) now has the DPF, and the new code to give it the extra horses. A3 2.0 TDI is mounted the other way round...

    2001 V5 Sat Nav Problems

Hey Greganory, Are you the new owner of this 'project' 2001 V5 at PVW ?? :D If so, I'm really glad my old 20V V5 is going to be put to some good use. So, what plans do you have ? Re : the sat nav - it stopped recieving sats about 6 months ago - then worked for a while then stopped...

    Bye Bye V5.

Well, after 4 years of trusty service and 133K on the clock the 20V V5 is being put into retirement (well for me anyway). I will truly miss the V5 engine, it really is a class act :( Still, driving away from the old girl in a 55 Audi A4 S-Line will propably ease my pain :funk: 2K trade in...

Engine temperature fluctuating after cam belt change

I *think* it uses the same sensor. The climate needs to know when the engine is warm to avoid blowing cold air when you have asked for warm. Use recirc and up arrow simultaneously to get back to normal readout. Climate functions normally when in diag. mode.

Engine temperature fluctuating after cam belt change

Best thing to do is get your car hooked up to VAG-COM - it will tell you what the problem is. However, if you have an SE, I take it you have climate control ? 1) press the recirculation button and the up arrow button simultaneously 2) us the + or the - button to scroll to 51c 3) press...

Engine temperature fluctuating after cam belt change

Your engine temperature (actual temperature) won't fluctuate downwards as you describe from your dash gauge. First thing I would check is that they haven't disturbed the connector on the back of the engine temperature sensor or it's got damp / crap in it.

Engine temperature fluctuating after cam belt change

No. Once warmed up it should always sit at 90.

    v5 milage

Yep, the V5 is almost identical in the timing chain stakes to the VR6. There are 2 timing chains - upper and lower IIRC - so it's one heck of a big job to have them changed. I was always advised to change at 120K by SEAT. However, I now have my V5 serviced by a local VW specialist...

    Milltek exhaust on V5?

Supersprint also do a system for the V5 Toledo - I think the volume may be an issue too though. If I recall correctly the V5 exhaust system is common on Golf, Bora, Toledo. Just that the Bora & Toledo have an extending pipe included to give the length. However, for 400 quid you could have...

    V5 Turbo

Supercharging is a more common option on the VR6. Quite a few of the Corrado crew have supercharged VR6's (which is essentially a V5 with an extra cylinder). Reliability is debatable though. I guess a turbo mod would involve lowering the engines compression ratio to avoid fireworks and...

    Engine warning light

Get it on VAGCOM if you can - the only way to find out for sure. If it threw a engine man. light it will be stored in the ECU even if it has disappeared.

any design faults i should know about?

Zoe - Does your V5 have SAT NAV ? Just trying to establish if you have a 10V or a 20V engine as 2001 was the transistion point.
