yeah it's got a clutch if it's not been used throught the winter its possible it'd nackered read a thread on another forum about it somewhere

do you have voltage to the compressor?

you can't check specific ac but i think it will show any short's or no signal faults.

i've checked the aircon system and it's low on gas so i'll get a regas kit and see what happens. They have a low pressure cutout so if there is no gas in there it won't work :)

no not yet going to get it re-gassed and take it from there. vag com may show up a fault but wouln't like to say for definate.

i now know the pump works. if i feed 12v to the compressor i can hear the clutch dropping in. Could the system need re gassing as i think there is a sensor stopping it working if the pressure is too low isnt there? It was gassed about 6 months back i think but she says she hasn't used it since :s

Looking at the faults it must be the engine speed sensor playing up...illiminate it by replacing and then take it from there :)
