    After the battery is disconnected you need to drive the car on a varied route for 30 mins or so to allow the ecu to relearn sensor perameters. The coolant temp sensor is also a weak point on all VAG cars of this age, because it has a wide band to read it rarely give a fault code when out of range

    The filter itself should be dry, the bottom of its housing loses its seal to the bulkhead and fills the heater housing with rainwater. Remove the glovebox and the fan unit and you'll find a puddle of water inside the heater box.
