Just checked 'How many left' and looks like less than 200 Mk2 GTI / Cupra etc left on UK roads, so can't imagine gonna be many owners on here. Cars getting stripped for Golf parts every day. I guess the Mk2 is going to become a rare sight like Uno & Renault 5 turbos.

I'm not sure what is going in with this forum - although there are far fewer Mk2 on the road, this place really is a ghost town. It used to be thriving too. I've still got my white 8v although it's awaiting some tlc.

WD40 did not work and the earth strap does not look replaceable due to it disappearing inside the starter rather than being mounted to it. Looks like the next step is to have a new starter fitted.:cry: .

Having looked at the starter motor, it has two main parts. There is a short piece of webbed strap like an earth strap between the two. This looks a little rusty and when my wife was trying to start the car I could see small sparks on it. Does anyone know if this may be the cause of the problem...
