I'd have a word with the garage that did it initially. You've paid them to do a job they've not done properly, so for you to pay for it again isn't on.....unless something has failed in between. Having been there, worked as with and alongside many people all I'll say is get a different mechanic.

Why not just top the tank up and whenever you hear the noise, top it up again? I don't get why people drive around with no fuel in the tank, may as well use that "30 miles left" as your emergency buffer and assume that to be 0 rather than 10% left?
