You could also pull the steering wheel off to look at the part number, but it will need coded so you cant get away with a straight swap without VCDS or something similar anyway.

Sounds like possibly a broken spring or maybe a worn top mount. If you can see the spring and the are ok I think a top mount can wait a bit. Obviously up to you tho. Just a suggestion, by no means correct!
