Looks like the DV hasn't been installed because the intercooler piping over the rocker cover has no ports for it to route to. The white bung next to the hockey puck is where it should be.
I'd start by checking for vacuum leaks. Check for torn hoses under the intake manifold and other hoses in the PCV system. Cleaning your throttle body might help, along with a throttle body alignment afterwards.
The ring is attached to the back of the face of the hub that is pushed out to be able to remove the bearing in the carrier. If he has bent it, you might have to replace the hub.
If you delete it, you'll get a constant CEL pretty much daily, even with a resistor put in. Deleting it is just a matter of unbolting it and removing all the attached hoses, blocking the throttle body nipple and detaching the line near the fuel filter under the car.
This allows it to vent...
If the airbag light was on before you fitted the resistors, you'll probably have to get the code cleared by a handheld diagnostic scanner or VAG.com.
