Hi All,

Got my '59 Leon Fr 2.0 TSI MOT'd the other day and was told "the turbo is leaking" but he couldn't tell me where from.. was just an MOT place really so wasn't expecting much. Took it to a VW specialist who have had a good luck at it and advised it's the diverter valve's seals (o-ring/diaphragm) that's leaking. The guy there said you can't get the seals separately so I need a new diverter valve which is £60 + £40 labour to fix, so £100 (inc Vat). I'm happy to pay this as I was half expecting to be told I needed a new Turbo costing many sheets, but wanted to check on here first to get some opinions on this if possible.

I found a thread about this exact thing i.e. EA888 /w K03 Turbo (which is what I believe my engine uses) and Diverter Valve over on the MK5 Golf GTI forums. Not sure if I'm allowed to post URLs in here, but you'll find it as the top result on Google if you search for "mk5 golf gti k03 directer valve how to"

That thread there advises about various revisions of the valve, B (original), and D and G. Goes pretty deep to be honest and don't think they'll be too receptive of me posting on there about my Leon FR..

Just wondered if anyone had any sort of similar experiences and or advice before I lash out and get this done. It doesn't feel down on power - especially with a remap running at around 255BHP - but the general consensus on that thread is that you notice a huge performance increase after replacing the valve.

Any replies or advice is most appreciated.

Hi. The 2.0 TSI uses a IHI turbo (not that it matter much)
The diverter valve is pretty common to fail anyway, so its common sense to replace it. The mechanic are correct you cant get the seal original from seat/VAG without the valve. But you can easy get the seal from different suppliers if you just get the seal dimensions.

The DV is around that price, but JESUS £40 labour to fit one is ridiculous. You can do it yourself and take about 20 minutes at max.

Thanks for the replies guys. So is this what I need?

awesomegti.com oem-2-0t-upgraded-piston-diverter-valve (can't post URLs yet)

The part number matches what I got over the phone from Seat Lookers Manchester parts department although they were reluctant to give me the part code initially..
There's 2 versions.. An OEM 'Pierburg' one for £44.99 and an official VW one for £65. What do you guys think?
The description definitely ties in with it being likely to fail with a remap.. Mines been Stage 1 for about 20k miles of it's 48k existence..

I'd love to have a go at replacing this myself. Not a mechanic but am technical and hands on and have found a couple of guides. Biggest problem seems to be getting under the car do I'd use my mates axel jacks and also having the right socket set to get a good angle on the bolts. I suppose I'm wondering if I could screw it up without noticing or create a bigger problem than the current oil leak..

That description from awesome gti is basically a load of ****.

If you post a thread in the Sere motors section on here Dave will be able to sort you with the latest revision G valve, part number is 06H 145 710G. Last time I checked they were about £40 delivered.

the oil is'nt the dv...
oil breather system is the oil..... but if visible around the dv, and presuming its not got a wooshy spacer on it, then thats not a good sign.

Hmm not sure about that. Only going off the advice of the VW specialist that they said a replacement DV was needed to fix the oil leak the MOT picked up

Update:

Finally got this sorted. Had loads of stuff going on recently so not had chance.

So, did some more research and decided to go for the Rev D piston type, not the Rev G revised Diaphragm type. Picked up the pierburg OEM Rev D for £44.99 (instead of the VW one for £65 which is exactly the same) from Awesome GTI who also recommended the Rev D as well as a couple of Audi mechanics I've spoken to recently.
Got a mate to fit it for £20 as I really couldn't be arsed scrambling under my car - and to my surprise the existing one was a Rev C Piston Type, not a diaphragm type like the 'VAG Specialist' said it was. I bet the lazy fecker didnt even take it off the turbo to check it. The Rev C is prone to failure however, even being a piston type from what I've found. It doesn't seem to be damaged as far as I can tell but glad it's been upgraded anyway.
Won't know if this has fixed the oil leak until I get my mate to take another look in a few days. However the difference in driving the car now is like night and day compared to before. Jesus Christ I thought it was fast before but now even a medium press of my right foot shoves me into the seat.

Hope my experience is helpful to anyone else. Will update thread if the oil leak persists so no news = good news.

The rev C is a diaphragm type, and looks identical to the rev G. Glad you got it sorted though mate.
