hi guys I have just been recently havin little arguments with a couple of guys about abf remapping and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the matter? Can you remap a 2.0 16v abf, or do you have to by a chip or get one made for you?

they can be reprogrammed so im told, the likes of revo will do it, but its mainly minor tweaking unless your gone for internals ect

its alot of money for the amount of gain your going to get, unless youv got cams ect then it aint worth doing, once you have done allth engine mods you want doing, then would be the time to get it remapped as it will accomadate all of the tweaking..but not really worth doing unless internal work has been done

for a n/a engine I really don't see that it will do a great deal.
As said above, it is perhaps something to think of after you've exhausted other avenues of performance

The money could buy you better brakes or suspension so that you can go faster without the extra grunt??

There is one well known german tuner who is specialist for ABF and he has also made dyno before/after.

before 161,8BHP and 184Nm (135lb/ft) with back box and 020 gearbox
after 168,9BHP and 193 Nm (142lb/ft) with back box and 020 gearbox

so that is 7BHP and ca 10Nm from a very good tuner. Chip cost 200eur

Dont think you will get 15BHP just with chip like you can read a lot of stories that ABF made std. already 170BHP but beucase of VR6 they have limited them on 150 BHP.

My friend has also try chip from ebay.. car goes at the top worser :D

agree with ollie totally dude, decent tyres, brake setup, on to a winner, i know that aint what you asked but its advice that many of us have taken, if you got the money to blow on a remap then go for it!...look for dinky daves thread, he has major work done to his which uses the same engne as ours.

Lighter is easy - Just take everything out behind the front seats
Brakes - Start looking at Mk3 Ibiza Brembo's or even a Porsche set up

Brown - Rattle Cans (although I'm not sure I would condone ruining a white valver)
