airbag light?

hi

had the airbag warning light come on on the speedo last week but also the "airbag off" light above the radio flashes for approx 10 mins then goes off again but not every time!

ive searched the forum but none of them mention anything about the "airbag off" light flashing? does this mean there is a problem with the passenger airbag as that light is for when the pass bag is turned off?

its a 2002 ibiza tdi130 sport

any help is appreciated

Possibly a problem with the passenger airbag switch in the glovebox? Try turning it off/on yourself to see if the switch is working. I had numerous problems with the airbag lights coming on when the car was new and I seem to remember the service guy saying the switch sometimes gave problems.

I have this exact problem! I find that the airbag off light tends to only flash when it has been left for a while in the cold, im not sure why this would occur but it does. My car is still under warranty and has been to the dealers twice, they say that it is a sporadic voltage fault, but as it is only sporadic they cant do anything about it unless the fault is actually occuring when it is plugged into the computer. So as it stands the fault is unfixed, has anybody else had this issue?

yeah that was the first thing i tried but it came on a few days later, but i might get a new switch as an experiment!

that is exactly what happens to mine! ive only had the light flashing when the car has been left overnight and theres been a frost

sporadic voltage fault? that sounds a bit strange as surely there would be a fault code logged as the airbag light is illuminated and can only be turned off by the dealer i think

any body got a wiring diagram for the airbag circuit so i can see what the "airbag off" light is connected to?

thanks matt

There is a separate control unit for the airbags. I assume this will control the warning lights. I had a very similar fault on my car when it was newish. During the winter the airbag light would come on as normal at start up but then not go out (indicating a fault during the self test). It would usually go off after 10 minutes or so. Restarting the car it was fine so it seemed to be temperature related. The dealer ended up changing the control unit (the actual fault reported was passenger front airbag). Problem came back after a few days; fault now reported as passenger side seat airbag. They changed the airbag itself(plus I got them to change the loom to the seat as well). Fault came back again; same behaviour but of course they never saw it as it had to be cold in the morning. I then got slightly annoyed and left the car with them. Fault finally diagnosed as a second faulty control unit. The guy could make the fault light come on and off by prodding the control box. Swapped out again for another new one (I'm assuming they did actually change it the first time; at least the fault code moved) and its been fine ever since. Mine was all under warranty but the control unit is something like 350 quid if I remember correctly. Hopefully in your case its just the switch playing up.

There is a fault code, but the dealer told me that as it is sporadic ie the fault is not actually there when they plug it in to the computer all sporadic faults are cleared and the fault finder looks only for faults that are occuring at that time. They said they can identify roughly where the fault is but not pin it down to a specific component. Anyway, as its on warranty i need to take it back to the dealers, but its just not convenient with work etc!

I eventually got it fixed under warranty. Apparently it was the airbag control unit within the passenger seat so the whole control unit/airbag had to be replaced.
