Aircon and heater doesn't work

Doing this pulls pretty much all the coolant out of the system by vacuum.
I didn't have any issues with airlocks, etc. when refilling the coolant. Just ran the car normally, then topped up the coolant level when it had settled after a short drive.

did you just stick the nozzle into the reservoir tank or via one of the pipes? which pipe did you pull out?

Stuck the nozzle directly into the top of the reservoir and used some gaffer tape to make a better seal.

Then I pulled the return line from the expansion tank and blocked off that hole in the expansion tank.

Found a vid, but it won't let me post here because it's MP4'

pretty effective. did you attempt to remove the bottom radiator hose or did you just use this method?

First attempt was before I bought the wet vac, so lots of soggy shoe action!

Hi Scott am I glad I found your thread. The dealer (I'm in Belgium) wants to charge me about £800 pounds for this job. If I run into any issues, are you still up to give pointers:)?

Sure. Although it's been a long time since I did the job.

Here are some pics of 'the journey'

Will be interesting to see if access is as simple on a LHD car.

You will probably need to remove the kick plate above the pedals for access, but that probably only means a few bolts.

I hope they are all designed to slide out towards the passenger side. It's great you took the time to document this procedure. Can't thank you enough for the savings. I know a friendly neighbourhood car guy that will do this so with your info this should go like a breeze. Although it does look feasible for beginners too

I'll be sure to enquire about any extra LHD car specifics

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm sure the heater matrix comes out towards the left hand side of the car on both R/H/D and L/H/D cars.

Did anyone's coolant in the reservoir smell bad too? Like fuel I suppose? The new coolant is in there for a week and it doesn't smell sweet like in the bottle and I see new 'stuff' floating on it.

Yes, that's exactly what mine was like. Kind of a burnt smell, almost like an old BBQ.

I recently replaced my coolant again, as it had lost it's pink colour in under 2 years. Turned brownish. The stuff I took out originally was orangey/brown, and that must have been 3 years old.

Something not quite right about these engines!

I think there must be a fault with the engine design, as the coolant I took out of mine originally was absolutely minging. Had a bonfire sort of smell.

Just found an old photo from when I drained it. Gross!

Mine was also full Seat history up to that point (about 75k I think).

Parts are ordered and the heater core will get swapped together with a full maintenance in the first week of April (not at the stealers though, they must think I'm rich) .

My coolant got replaced feb. 22nd and already has some floating stuff in it again.
Then I got fear struck last night as my coolant had dropped about 500 ml this week combined with that awful oily smell (smells like paint thinner as well) sounded like a faulty head gasket. The smell is probably from the rust colour then and there's a good chance there is a coulant leak somewhere.

Any news on where the coolant is going?

Hi Guys. Similar issue with my 13reg 2.0tdi with 40k on the clock, no heating since last Friday. Upper bulkhead hose is hot and the lower one only warm-ish so looks like blocked heater matrix.

Does anyone know the heater matrix part number?

Cheers

How did you get on? Fellow mark 7 tdi owner with no heat in car but also coolant loss? VW want a £1100 to replace matrix and investigate further, pointing at charge cooler ... anyone have any suggestions on coolant loss (reservoir goes from Max to empty within a week) ???
