Just wondering how many people on here are Marshals?

After watching all the varios forms of motorsport for the past :censored: years I have decided that it is now time to 'give something back' so I have just signed up to become a Marshal and will be doing my first days at the Harewood Hillclimb on the 13th & 14th May.

I have put my name forward for a few more dates at Harewood as hillclimbs seem to be a good place to get "hands on" experience and hopefullt will try my hand on the circuits if not this year then certainly next.

I have recieved quite abit of advise so far from various places but just wondering if there was anyone on here withsome advise etc.

You rang ;)

Best advice I can give you - there's no such thing as a stupid question!
If you've got a question, ask it.

Don't know what else you've been told, so apologies if I'm telling you what you already know.
Put together a kit bag. You'll want clothing for all weathers - last Monday I needed full wet gear at the start of the day, and factor 20 sun lotion by the end! Sun lotion and lip balm are good at warding off wind-burn as well, which you often get stood out in the open all day (my workmates know when I've been marshalling from my red face on a Monday morning!). Sturdy footwear is a must - trainers are a no-no. Get yourself some gardening/work gloves or welders gauntlets. Need these to protect your hands if picking up sharp or hot items, or dealing with a fire (best to be loose fitting so you can just shake them off if they catch fire!). A few baseball caps - they keep the sun off, keep the rain from running down your face, or keep your head warm. Plenty to drink and something to eat. Those are your basics really for a day's marshalling.

Any questions, I highly recommend the Marshals Forum on the 10/10ths website:

http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=39

The second best forum on the web after this one (imho).
Loads of knowledgeable, friendly people on there who will be happy to answer your questions. (I've got the same username there as here)

There's also quite a good marshal training video been put up on the FIA Institute website that you might like to watch:

http://www.fiainstitute.com/

(Top video in the right-hand pane - probably difficult to watch without broadband)

I'm happy to help with anything else you want to know, either here or on the 10/10ths forum.

I've been looking on Ten-tenths and found loads of info.

Looking forward to it now, should be an interesting couple of days, hopefully the start of something good.

Hey chaps....this is very interesting!

Where do I apply to join?

I got intouch with the chief marshal at Harewood Hillclimb as it's my local circuit and volunteered there.

I have also joined the BMMC (British Motorsport Marshals Club) who sort out alot of the marshalling at events from what I can see.

See here for details - http://www.marshals.co.uk

As Phill said above there is a huge amount of info in the marshals forums on http://www.ten-tenths.com
