think i paid about £12 for my bonnet catch from seat, it wasnt that expensive craig.

Ah apologies Craig, missed that question on my phone! Yes it was a genuine Polo one, but a cheaper Fleabay buy ;) £4.99 iirc?

Thanks guys. I will try Fleabay and see if I can get one then if not it will be the dealer.

Im assuming the Polo one is the same??

If/when I get my new bonnet I may aswell fit a new catch while I am at it :).

Lily, can I ask how much you think you have spent on the car (including buying it) you can PM like, I am just interested, all the costs (not like proper EXACT breakdown, but a realistic guesstimate)?

New front panel? No, all original ones, (apart from the subframe)... All other bits were just blasted and coated :). Good Welsh price! ;)

Why so secretive with the prices? I told you exactly how much all my coating and blasting cost when you asked!

Helps others when getting quotes!

IIRC, you kept the cards pretty close to your chest on your thread too, David?

For what it's worth, £100 for the subframe, slam panel, cowling various brackets etc.

Thanks for this! it will help as a stick to beat the powder coaters with when I rebuild/repaint the front of mine!

Your making great progress - well done! The front subframes a pain to line up isn't it! I had to do it on my own - lol

Oh and I think you need to read my thread again as I don't recall being secretive on prices generally! - just reluctant to source/provide part numbers/prices a SEAT/VW dealer can easily and quickly provide. In fact I've provided you with numerous prices, product recommendations, genuine part numbers, advice, techniques and photo's to refer to - so a little unfair with that comment!

Cheers!

Wow had a lot of fun reading this thread. Gave me inspiration and ideas for my car. Wish I had the money, time and general knowhow to do all this too :p

Thanks all! :)

Rear overhaul to come... A rather tragic, life changing experience has stalled the progress slightly!

Mini Update (February 2012)

Before I start, I'd just like to say a few things. This overhaul has been pretty huge. As I went along, I decided to jump feet first into most things under the car.

It's now been off the road since November. It has been quite a challenge, though the 13th of February saw the loss of my Father. Battling on with this car has somewhat taken my mind off it, and it's been a very good past time.

Here's just a few pics of my progress so far. The rear beam was in desperate need of attention.

I started off by using a wire wheel on a grinder, (which was insanely fast!) and this saw most of the flaking and rust gone. Instead of taking it to the powdercoaters again, I decided on a more rustic, hard wearing look. I used Hammerite Waxoyl Underbody Seal this time... (Which is still tacky now, 4 days in!)

All clips and brackets replaced, in true OCD-crazy fashion. (Notice the new Goodridge hoses);

Wax has survived the winter months, (in the garage!);

Oh, and a cheeky little something;

I'll post some more pictures once everything has been reassembled.

Like I said on another forum, Sorry to hear about your dad. Thoughts are with you and the rest of your family during this difficult time :).

That is a perfect picture for me, do you mind if I save a copy of it?? Lets me see where exactly the top of the sideskirts fit for when I get mine fitted onto my car :funk:.

Thanks all :)

Well here it is, wrapped up in summary. The rest of the pictures from the rear overhaul.

As I loosened the plastic nuts holding the arch liners in place, a stub disintegrated. Gutted;

Still a few things to do under here. (Fuel filter changed soon after!);

Stub axles were given a hefty going over with the Makita, and some Hammerite rust remover was used to further enhance the surface. It was pretty pitted mind, not much I could do about that!

20120228_153311.jpg

Since my mate had gone over to Loughborough for the weekend, I had no one to help me with the hoisting of the rear beam. So I improvised with a piece of decking and two trolley jacks. It worked a treat!

I apologise for forgetting to take a few pics of finished articles. It's hard to remember when you're concentrating and trying to get it right. Also, I hope it's not too boring!

Thanks again! :)

Very good work!!

Is possible to remove the black in the arches? Be good to tackle the body corrosion underneath sooner rather than later.

I used the plank/jack method too! - only had one jack though so balancing was hard.

Whats your method for preventing fluid loss when replacing all four rear brake hose's with braided? -

Cheers! The black arches will be dealt with at the sprayers soon! As for the hoses, I initially clamped them on the flexi leaving the body and onto the beam, but later decided to change those too! Had no other choice but to drain the system. It'll never be as clean as yours though!
