These build threads are really good, wish there was more thought put into this before I bought my £650 Forge FMIC.
The only issue I have with these is that the main part of the FMIC that will see the boost gases passing will be the lower half of it. In all of these build thread this is obstructed by the bumper a bit.
I know that these are producing very similar cooling to the expensive ones but wonder if the above point will be whats effecting this type from being equally as good as the Forge ones.
Has anyone asked Forge about supplying an adjusted crash bar to save on all the additional cutting that is being done to get around this problem??

Thats a BIG negatory good buddy! There is only about one, possibly two rows obscured by the crash/bumper bar. The 45 degree angle slam panel cross braces prevent it going any higher...

Sounds perfect then.
Have thought about selling my FMIC and fitting one of these.
I'll see how things go with winter modifications

Is it a Forge one? Ang on, that rings a bell, isn't it Rob's old one?

If so, you'll be selling it for exactly the same reason :)

It's a great DIY mod, I've really enjoyed tinkering/fabricating again, it's been a long time :) When I was an MVT, I restored a few classics and my own RS escorts and Rally cars, I could literally work all night till dawn, challenging and immensely satisfying at the same time.

This is childs play compared to the things I used to attempt but I've enjoyed it immensely.

No I bought my one in a Forge GB a while ago.
As the car is going to be used on the track I'd rather be set up for running a cheaper FMIC than a £650 one.
Alot cheaper to have a spare one @ £90 than £650

Lovely car matey, love the custom fmic. The red and black ties in so well together too ,looks so simple, yet really effective! Don't see many red ones, id say this is definitely my favorite. Do you have any pictures with the mo's on?

Also, are you keeping the fmic in its raw aluminium finish or will you be going black with it?

Yeah, i'll post some soon, currently having them refurbed..

Going to leave the FMIC in its original colour, just trying to think of something to stencil on it..

Another quick update..

MAP pipe with protective sleeve, new MAP sensor fitted and in final position..

fmic_39.jpg

End elevation showing clearand of MAP pipe and position of clamp, notice that the clamp bolt just clears the chassis leg giving an indication of how far the pipe/coupler sticks out..

fmic_40.jpg

Modded battery tray in, custom CA scoop fitted and 80/100mm induction pipe tucked to the side..

fmic_41.jpg

Induction pipe in place..

fmic_42.jpg

Finally! Pipe work complete and bolted up!

So, on the final straight now. Will do another test fit of the bumper cover tomorrow and check clamp clearances then a final bolt check before fitting the bumper cover and bolting back in place.

I've decided to use the spare couplers and pipe to create a 'hard piped' brake ducting solution, not all the way but approx 50% of the distance.

Looking great and pretty much exactly how I would want mine set up like.
As much alloy pipe as possible and as little silicone as possible.

I'm going to look inot brake ducting in thw winter when I have the front end off too. I've cut my arch liner to allow a straighter path to the callipers.
Also the Pheaton has a stone guard with ducting built in, this can be cut out and welded into our stone guards;)

With a little more care and time you could have some of the pipes welded, it would be quite easy to have the two 90degree pipes on each side mate up perfectly, mark them and take them to a local metal shop (there's a stainless steel fabrication shop in every town, most do aluminium fab as well) and get them to zip them up. Take that one step further and you could add on the 45 degree pipe from the cooler as well. You'd have to be pretty much spot on though, the couplers can take up a little variation in mating angle but not much.

The Phaeton stone guard, has anyone actually done it yet, I was watching the thread on clubgti and it seems to have stalled.

Just read through and a very nice build here buddy! It's always worth getting the intercooler pipework sorted the first time instead of messing around with blown off pipes etc like I went through.

I love the red and black :)

Cheers :)

Why, what was wrong with your pipework for it to keep blowing pipes off?

There was a few on VWVortex too but cannot find them any more.
I'd love to get the Boost pipes welded but having to change intercooler would be more of a PITA.
I could get the pipes made up solid on either side of the FMIC with joiners to the FMIC.
That would work out well.
I have several mates with full welding tickets so no bother about getting stuff welded.
I have sourced some 60mm aluminium pipe too so just need to source a mandrel bender (mates work might have these) then see how I get on.
An alloy boost piped system with cold side DV will sound ACE

I would never suggest having a totally solid/rigid system, you would want a little 'play' in there :)

Ally welding is a different ballgame to mild steel or SS TIG, almost an art form :)
