Ok Ibiza Mk5 aficionados' help me out. [B)]

My cousin owns a 6J Mk5 2008 Ibiza SC 1.4.

She went away on holiday for a week or so and came back to a dead Ibiza. Nothing had been left on.

First time it happened, her dad charged it up and she took it to a local dealer, who diagnosed a bad battery. Without consulting me, she went ahead and got a brand new battery installed (while the car was under warranty).

All seemed fine on an almost daily basis until she left the car again for a period of 10 days over the xmas period. Came back to a dead Ibiza again. She called Green Flag who came out to her, and he said battery had been drained by something on the car, he suggested alarm (I think unlikely) but said the battery was fine. Gave her a jump/boost and all has been well on a daily basis since. But she knows if she leaves it for anything up to a week or more its likely to be flat again.

Now i've read a thread on here about others suffering similar issues and getting a software update, which may or may not of solved the issue? I presume this is to correctly turn off or reduce the current draw on whatever is staying active after the car is turned off.

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=276832

Also found something similar reported on the RAC forums as well as on some foreign forums.

http://www.rac.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?12604-seat-ibiza-1-4-2009-3-door-repeated-flat-battery

Its pretty poor in my opinion for a modern car to be draining its battery in under a fortnight, for example I left my Leon Cupra parked un-started recently for several months due to some health problems (long story), and it fired up first time like it had been parked ip the day before. Despite the alarm LED going out after a month as I believe it is designed to do.

She again took the car to the same local dealer (won't name them but they are not my favoured choice) :hole:

As the car is now out of warranty they wanted £76 to plug it into a diagnostic, which when my cousin complained at the cost they said ok we can do it for £60. :ban: Revolving price structure obviously.

Anyway she decided not to pay out and has left it as it is for now, as the car is ok on a daily basis. I think in the colder conditions its only going to be putting strain on the battery and I can see that period of time beginning to drop where it could end up failing after just a weekend parked.

The dealer also suggested that the software update mentioned by other owners is not gospel.

I plugged her car into my VCDS at the weekend and did a full auto scan. It came up with a number of faults, which i believe are only related to the fact the car had no power.

If anyone has had this software update and it solved your issues can you let us know about it, and if you have access to VCDS or are a tech in the know, if the SW number is listed in the logs below can you compare numbers?

Any assistance would be gratefully received, don't believe that anyone should have to pay to have a lead plugged into a car to check the software is at least up to date, at the very least it should be a nominal charge.

It's got to be something around this:

01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded

I don't suppose it was serviced at 6k miles was it? Looks like something is iffy with the coding of the unit

That's the only fault I wasn't really sure of. I've not reset the DTC's at this point because if it goes to a dealer I'd rather the faults be still visible. But a dtc reset could clear it and it never return.

I'd have to ask her, but based on her overall mileage its likely it was serviced around that point.

The BCM controls almost everything electrical on the car, if its incorrectly coded I.e for a 5 door when it only has three doors the module constantly looks for the missing components - keeps can bus in the awake state which can kill the battery.

The only way of getting the coding 100% is spend ages matching the equipment codes or online via Geko.

It wouldn't however be the first 2008+ ibiza to be fitted with a poor quality battery from the factory.

Seat have a set procedure for checking them and getting it swapped under warranty can be pretty difficult.

Also with regards to the software version if you arrange to have the car at some point and visit me in didsbury I'll check the software version against the online releases and update if necessary (its more accurate to check it online against the newer software versions).

I had the same problem, got it sorted with a software update at the dealership

Any possibility of you or anyone else being able to quote the workshop action that covers this?

Any cars with this remedial work having been done should have this recorded in their service book.

Thanks, I'm just think ahead so that I can try to get my local Seat dealer to include this in what they do when checking/updating S/W during the service (like they claim they do!) as I've suffered a battery drain for no obvious reason, in the past month - but only once.

I have the same problem bought my car in January if I leave my car for longer than 4 days it goes dead have had to phone the recovery guys 4 times just lucky I was still under Warranty. Like my car but having enough going to the seat garage in Glasgow to see if they can fix it. If it is a Software update how much does that cost average for that as out of Warranty??

I think that your first problem will be getting a Seat dealer to be able to remember exactly which cars were affected by the S/W update requirement, an idle boast is made that Seat and Audi dealers check the cars at every service for outstanding S/W requirements and update FOC.

My experience of a 2003MY 9N Polo's needs for possible S/W update is that while that car showed all the symptoms of needing an update, they always said "not required", so 11 years down the line I just suffer the inconveniences.

One other thing, this might not be a S/W issue but a genuine fault that is being difficult to fix, so dealer not interested. Maybe remove boot and glovebox light bulbs if fitted.

Edit, check interior lights are switching off, VAG cars tend to have a supply source that is only kept active for a certain time after the car ignition is off and doors are locked, to avoid this potential problem, though there was a S/W update, reference number unknown to me yet, that made sure that this was working as intended.

Thanks for the help it's a seat Ibiza 2009 1.4 sport so going to the dealer tomorrow to see what they say if they don't fix it I'm just returning it as under fit for purpose rule so ok with that.. I'll let them know what you say however hoping they know the issue already but can't see that happening its Arnold Clark I bought it from..

Think I just had the same problem with my battery, haven't driven it in 4days and it wouldn't turn over today, the battery worked as the radio and all the warning lights all worked but the time and trip computer all reset, got it started again by jumping it from my dads Golf. The previous owner had the battery changed as it's now an RAC battery so I'm guessing it could be the same problem as everyone else, should I get a software update for it from a stealer?

an amp draw test is a must before you do anything though and more and more of these faults are stemming from faulty alternators.

In the case of daughter's late 2009 Ibiza SC, it was a case of me jumping into car, started it up, reversed up driveway, then drove 50 yards to a giveway - charge "gone" light on, did an about turn dumped car in driveway and grabbed my own car. That was an alternator - probably regulator, failure, car was 3.5 or 4.5 years old with low mileage. I replaced the Spanish built (with UK made regulator) Bosch with a genuine Bosch rebuild from ECP - guy there was surprised to see such a new/clean Bosch alternator being handed in. About a year later, with a previously regularly longish runs only use, I jumped into car and was rewarded with all lights out and not enough charge to start! Removed battery and voltage was very low, recharged battery, left it for a few days off the car, voltage looked okay, refitted it and continued to use the car on longish only runs - no repeat of that problem - yet!

My car is running fine now. The problem was the dealer gave me a smaller battery so okay if I drove the car allot however I don't so always died and needed a jump start. Check if you have a bit of space were the battery is as my old one had allot. My new one however just fitted in and never touched it for 7 days and started perfectly. So that might be the issue, as dealers might give you a small battery rather than spending a few pounds on a good one..

No, in the case of my daughter's car, it was bought new and Seat had fitted the correct battery, which is same capacity as that in wife's old 2003MY Polo 1.4 75PS, space for a bigger battery, as needed if it had a TDI engine, but correct for the 1.4 16V petrol engine.

Your car must have had a battery change earlier in its life, and someone was being a bit tight and stupid!
