I have a 2001 1.4s as a run about. Having only covered a genuine 57k this is a great little car apart from the brakes that inspire little confidence. It has passed mot's ok so meets that minimum spec. However it would be good to improve on this.

Are they all just like this? Is there a common fault to look for? Is there a common upgrade to improve it?

Hey, what size are your discs? I have a cupra, didn't like the brakes so I put some Ferodo DS2500 brake pads in and it made a hell of a difference. Only difference is they're squeal when cold but you get used to it, and they throw more brake dust out, and they're not too cheap either, but they're well worth the money.

Thanks, this is definitely not a cupra! Discs are standard size bit well worn with a scored surface. Not sure how much this affects braking efficiency. What I have found is tiny splits in the
Servo vacuum hose either side of an inline valve. This appears to have been the subject of a recall in 2005 though I doubt it would be honoured now. I'll replace the hose and see what happens
