Brake lights

Should the brake lights light up when the brake is pressed but the ignition is off!

As long as they light up when the ignition is on

Hi,
Because thats what is happening with my toledo tdi dsg 2005.
I only noticed it yesterday.A day after the abs repair kit was fitted by a garage.
It is not something that I had checked before so dont know if it is normal with all seats.

Every car I've had, the brake lights still work when the key isn't in the ignition. Some kind of safety feature I guess (ie if car is being towed, although this would require the key to be in the ignition to prevent activation of the steering lock.)
