Race Built motor. Fully balanced. AGU crank (used but crack tested before build)
either very unlucky, or other suggested potential contributor is the use of non mass damped crank pulley.. (neuspeed in this case) - resonant/harmonics possible contributor. all speculation from the carnage however.

Engine revved to 9krpm, on solid lifters. not @ time of failure tho.
590bhp (peak) but not @ time of failure, lower boost being run at the time

Owch.. Feel very sorry for my friend/owner of this engine.

Carnage is the right word there, Bill.

Was the crank balanced with the pulley on?

    whole engine was fully balanced.
balanced vs running and 4cyl bang bang harmonics however..... would potentially be a.n.other thing

Engine built by a very reputable engine builder very familiar with 1.8t engines

it had covered about 50 laps round silverstone national circuit + dyno time, otherwise it was a fresh new build. :(

Resonance or big power? Block material looks surprisingly granular, crack(s) look like it propogated VERY quickly...

ive seen a few engines let go in my time (mostly alfa romeos admitadly) but this is the worst ive seen. the forces involved to do that damage so quickly always amazes me.
