I realise the answer will probably be no you complete twat  , but over the past few weeks (during which I've had my AC on higher due to winter weather) I'm sometimes getting a faint but noticeable pleasant whiff from my car, smells like one of those tree air freshener things but I've never had one in car.

I've had car for just over a year and have only noticed this recently. is it possible that during my first (10k) service they put something onto the air filters to produce a nice whiff when AC is on?

realise it's a stupid question but I notice it when driving in different towns so it ain't coming from a particular place.

You have bacteria build up in the air con system, im sure you can get a product which cleans it out, i cant remember the name of it mind!

An aircon cleaner may have been used - Comma Do an Aircon cleaning spray that tries to remove bacteria in the system - usually when u switch the aircon off u can get a nasty smell of bacteria - this is replaced with the comma cleaning smell (or at least a more plesant smell than that of the bacteria) instead.

Having said that, people who use it usually leave a little tag hanging from your rear-view mirror to say its been used and that funny smells may occur for 24-48hrs after picking the car up......

he's actually saying he has a nice smell

that's the thing ... it ain't a bad smell, actually smells quite nice, but doesn't happen all the time and it is a faint smell. if it's bacteria build up, is that dangerous to my health?

what i was trying to say above is that his aircon might have been serviced/cleaned with the Comma spray - hence the NICE smell (ok faint but still a nice one) rather than that of bacteria which would have been removed if the garage performed said service.
