Hey guys

I'm looking to buy a Seat ibiza 1.2 2012 plate (registered October 9th 2012). It has about 60k miles on it. Just wonder if anyone can provide any tips / look out for with this car / any some questions.

1) Does this car run on a chain or timing belt - was told by owner it's a chain

2) Any things to look out when inspecting it?

3) They are want around £3,000 is that fair for this modem / year

Any help thanks.

Chain 1.2TSI was still getting recalls up to 2012 for chains also widely known for turbo/boost actuator faults. Make sure recalls have been done if applicable.

My 2014 broke its turbo (at 26k miles) on variable/long life servicing, so I personally wouldn't touch one that has been on that service regime, which is about an 18000 mile interval. The standard oil change interval is 9000 miles which I would stick to from now on.

It's still one of my favourite 4 cylinder motors ever.

Hey Pal

You don't happen to know if this cars fuel filter is serviceable item? I. E that it is in engine bay and and not in the fuel tank?

Start another thread asking that exact question. Someone on here has surely downloaded the workshop manual. (Its about 7 euro from ERWIN SEAT by the way)

Lmao great minds. So are you saying that you have serviced it? Where do you et these workshop manuals from. I was looking at haynes but seems they only do up to the mk4 ibiza

No I haven't serviced one.
But official VW tech support site ERWIN SEAT will let you register and pay for an hour. During that hour you download all the documentation/manuals you need.
A 2012 is referred to as a Mk5 on here, but in a lot of the internet its known as a MK4 or IBIZA 6J and there was a major facelift in 2012 too.

The Garmin dash top Sat nav - (Seat Portable System) can display a Water Temp dial (and RPM or Outside Temperature) on mine. So there's a sensor input clearly.

I would have to check if the display between the dials can show it as well but I don't think it does. Just off outside to have a look.

Nope. The digital display can be selected to only

● Driving speed ● Journey duration ● Average speed ● Distance ● Operating range ● Average fuel consumption ● Current fuel consumption ● Outside temperature indicator ● Speed warning

and realtime MPH can be added vice KPH

The coolant temp warning light is in the rev counter.

Warning light blurb from the Manual:

Level*/Temperature of the coolant 
There is a fault if: ● The warning symbol does not go out again after a few seconds. ● The warning lamp lights up or flashes while the vehicle is moving, and three acoustic warning signals ››› are emitted.

This means that either the coolant level is too low or the coolant temperature is too high.

Coolant temperature too high If the warning lamp comes on, stop the vehicle, turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down. Check the coolant level. If the coolant level is correct, the overheating may be caused by a malfunction of the radiator fan. Check the radiator fan fuse and have it replaced if necessary ››› page 195.

If the control lamp lights up again after driving on for a short distance, stop the vehicle and switch the engine off. Contact a Technical Service or a specialised workshop.

Coolant level too low If the warning lamp comes on , stop the vehicle, turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down. First check the coolant level. If the level of the coolant is below the “MIN” mark, top up with coolant liquid ››› .

WARNING ● If your vehicle is immobilised for technical reasons, move it to a safe distance from traffic. Turn the engine off, turn the hazard lights on and place the warning triangle. ● Never open the bonnet if you can see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compartment. Risk of scalding. Wait until you can no longer see or hear escaping steam or coolant. ● The engine compartment is a dangerous area. Before carrying out any work in the engine compartment, switch off the engine and allow it to cool down. Always note the corresponding warnings ›››

UPDATE: So went to look at the car today. In really good nick. Some swirl marks and scratches but can sort. Looked like the AC compressor was leaking from some point, so managed to haggle price down. Feel like can feel some knock sounds, there is some vibrating in steering wheel when you brake so something to look into. So yeah a few job to do but not the worse jobs for my little sister. She really happy. I'll post some pics of the vehicle and plan to hear more from me now asking for advice lol

One place lots of all VW Group cars AC leak from is the pressure sensor, it can be found, on these cars, on the driver's side/RHS wheel arch.

Hey Rum. Whilst I have you hope to pick your brain. Looked at previous paper work and they had the pressure sensor replaced and then regassed back in 2017. So here are my questions

1) Is the first picture the pressure sensor? If so then it seems clean so not leaking from there.

2) Please see pictures of AC compressor - the pics are from underneath and above ( pic from jndeather it still seem quite wet the oil). But on the top of the AC compressor there is quite a think coating of oil, to the point the AC comoressor looks very dirty, black on too but silver underneath and if you wipe it u get a decent build up of semi wet build up. but not sure where it's coming from?

Yes the top picture is the AC pressure sensor, I'd think/hope that that oil is just engine oil left from when someone was a bit clumsy with replacing the oil filter - when the oil filter cover/retainer is removed, you really do need to have wrapped a rag round the alloy part to avoid oil running out and down the engine area.

Edit:- I'd reckon that someone has already replaced the auxiliary belt as it shows the Conti branding, normally the original belt would just show the VW Group part number - nothing wrong with Conti belts though!

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes the aux belt seems to be replaced as it does look pretty new, no cracks on it at all. I have to hope maybe it was just years of oil. Spills as previous owner did use same garage for last 4 years. I'll give it a clean up and then see how I get on.

Also is this normal car is on but sitting stationary, when I turn the AC on in car the radiator fan kicks on, and when you turn AC of the radiator fans stops with it in tandem .
