Cambelts

Hi
Could anyone tell me if this would work- can a cambelt be changed by cutting the old cambelt down to half the width, slipping the new one onto the pulleys, and then removing the rest of the old one before tensioning the new belt, thus maintaining the valve timing throughout.

Yes it is possible, ed China on wheeler dealers used to do it this way on most occasions.
Thanks for your reply - I have often wondered if this would work, but it seemed to easy to be true, bearing in mind the cost charged by garages. I haven't seen Ed do it on TV, but I thought it could be done by cutting the belt through with a stanley knife, possibly with the engine ticking over, and then slipping the new belt on after loosening the belt tension slightly.
