Canbus System

Couple of questions...

First of all, are the interior roof lights linked to the canbus system at all? Just checking if I need to get LEDs with built in resistors or not.

Also, I've got canbus free LED sidelights but once they turn on, one of them turns itself off over time, but turning them off and on again seems to cure the issue for a little while longer.

I've also got HID headlight bulbs fitted, and again, once I turn these headlights on, within seconds one of the sidelights will turn itself off which I found to be quite odd.

Any help?

Hey,

Yes the interior lights are linked into the canbus system.

On the other problem with the headlights i'm not sure maybe someone else can help with that one :)

The interior lights in the Mk2 Leon are NOT linked to the CAN bus bulb warning system. You can therefore fit any type of LED bulbs (error free CAN bus non error free CAN bus ones) and you won't get the "bulb out" warning coming on in your instrument cluster.

Fitting LED bulbs where incandescent bulbs used to be is a bit of a minefield. Even error free CAN bus LEDs can cause issues. It's basically a game of trial and error. Sometimes the same LEDs that work for one owner don't work for another owner who has exactly the same spec of car. The proper way to do it is to get the BCM coded for the use of LED bulbs but this requires VCDS or VCP and someone who knows what they are doing on the coding side.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you have fitted HID headlight bulbs. Have you fitted a complete aftermarket HID kit complete with ballasts, or was your car factory fitted with HID headlights?

Thanks for the information, I guess I'll try some out and see how they go.

I've got aftermarket HIDs with ballasts fitted to the car when I brought it.

I think the best advice I can give you is to find out what make/model of HID lights have been fitted and get hold of some installation instructions and a wiring diagram for them. With some luck the manufacturer will have a downloadable PDF on their website. Then find out how they were supposed to be wired in, and more importantly how they have actually been wired in.

Maybe the side lights are supposed to be switched off when the HIDs come on and it's the other side not going off that has an issue. The HID instructions and wiring diagram is going to be the key to finding out. Then you can start tracing wires.

Great advice mate, thank you. I'll have a look for that tomorrow!

Do you happen to know the interior bulb sizes for a PFL? I've only got the front roof light unit and the boot light, don't have any lights in the rear or above mirrors.

It depends on which interior light unit you have but it will be festoon style bulb(s) and possibly also some 501's. The boot light uses a festoon style bulb.

There are different lengths of festoon and I don't remember offhand what lengths you need so your best option will be to take out your current ones and measure them.

Yeah I'll have to give them a measure. With festoon bulbs do you measure from contact to contact or just the actual glass bulb?
