hi all

was just wondering too those of you who have taken to fitting an after market cd player, was the radio conections on the back of the standerd radio normal dso conections like most radios , or did you have to start moddifying the loom?

and also does any one no if the centre heater vents come off seperatly or are they part of the centre dash trim? as i am going to fit my dvd player in there :D and use the vents as a disguise when car is left alone.

Mine was done by the previous owner but by looking at it it doesn't look like the lom has been modified, and also mine is fitted where the dash vents were, although im not sure if there will be space to find it behind them... good idea though so good luck!

Ive seen it, it doesnt fit flush with the dash and sticks out a little bit but its been custom done and fibreglassed so its smoothed in. I doubt you'd get all the wiring of a dvd player behind there, and the vents to cover it as a security feature wouldnt work unless you did a nice custom one if you were bored or very patient!
Top idea to put it there though, and looks pretty oem.

the head unit isn't wired in yet, but there is enough room to put it in there. the wiring loom for the cd player is already in place, but i'm waiting to buy my mates dvd player/cd headunit before i do the wiring.
i was worried about cutting the air vents at first, but to be honest, it was a lot easier then i first thought!
the cd player is nice and snug between the old air vents, and wont move without a lot of effort, so i'm happy about it.
when you take the air vents out, it comes out as one unit, held together by some tiny bits of plastic, i simply cut this in half, got all the air vent slats out and then put the vents back in to support the cd player.
i then cut out the middle bit of the dash between the vents and sanded it down (still more sanding to go) and then slid the cd player in. its a perfect fit, and will look loads better once the new dvd player is in, with its surround, as that will hide the gaps.
wiring really should be an issue, as a lot of the cables will fit in the air vent holes and above the big silver tape deck which is already in there.
altogether, i'm chuffed with this, and it does look semi-OEM.

just remember, take your time! i haven't made a mistake yet, and the sanding has come out nicely so far, but i really dont want to rush it. so far it has taken around 3 hours to do that. i reckon another half hour sanding to make it look nice, and an hour to wire my new headunit up

any questions, feel free to ask :)

I've blocked the ports off at the back, so that the air only comes out of the 2 side vents. This can be done with the rubbers from inside the vents that you can out. You'll know what I mean when its done. can just be glued in place.

I never use my air condiitoning or air vents, only directly on to the window, so shouldn't be a problem.

cus please tell me how you took out those vents? I have tried but thought that they were part of the entire dash..??

right, well the outside dash part doesn't come off. the steps i took are...

- take front of dash off (radio facia)
- remove big silver stereo/air con control unit
- take hazard light/TCS/ etc switches out, small flat screw driver and they will come out towards you
- disconnect switches from the wiring harnesses
- behind the silver box that you took out is some plastic shaped into a cross, you need to unscrew this and take it out
- this final bit is tricky, but the plastic which holds the switches in needs to come out as well. if you look underneith the holes where the switches slide into, you will see a dark black bit of plastic, which needs to slide to the left, and using a bit of force it will come out.
- once this is out (took me a good 5 minutes) you have access to the vents from under neith.
I found that sliding these back and then pulling them down worked a treat, and they came out fine.
- once these are out, you can see the air vent system at the back, and that needs cutting slightly to fit the new stereo (i'll get pics up at some point) . it has two plastic sleeves over it which pull straight off, making cutting the plastic behind very very easy.
- you need to then modify the air vents as described in my previous post.
- cut the middle bar out, and sand it down (this is on the facia itself) get it nice and smooth
- fit the modified air vents back into the car (i'll get a picture of mine) so that your cd player will sit in nicely
- and then slowly get your cd player back in.

this is the process i used. now all i need is a surround for the stereo to hide the bits i've cut etc.
as you can see from the pictures, my stereo needs pushing in a bit more, and i have plenty of room behind to do that.
wiring isn't an issue as you'll find out.

good luck to everyone who does this, hopefully my steps above will help you lot out!
i'd say to alot around 5-6 hours to fully get it in, and wired up .

have fun :)

Cus thanks for the good explenation will be looking into this very soon. However its not to fit a cd player. I have wanted to place my boost gauge there for ages. I have it down where the cupra R has it standard but you can hardly see it when driving, or you have to look down (quite dangerous at high speeds)
Now if I took out one of the air vents I can fit the gauge there, and should look quite neat imo...

but I'll see in due time!

cheers again!
